Nearly a mile beneath South Dakota, the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment detected a single unusual particle interaction that researchers have spent months trying to explain.
The result reached 2.6 sigma, enough to get scientists’ attention, but far below the 5-sigma standard normally required to claim a discovery in particle physics.
So what did LUX-ZEPLIN actually detect? It could still be an extremely rare background event that hasn’t been identified yet, or it could be something genuinely new.
For now, scientists aren’t claiming they found dark matter. They’re saying they found something they still can’t fully explain.
