Does evolution disprove Islam? Was Adam the father of all humans or all hominids? And can the theory of evolution be reconciled with the Qur’an and Islam? In this episode of The Ansari Podcast, Dr. Shoaib Malik, Lecturer in Science and Religion at the University of Edinburgh, joins us to explore Islam and evolution, human origins, Prophet Adam, Darwinian evolution, and the relationship between science and religion and science and Islam.
We ask some of the biggest questions surrounding Islam, evolution, and the origin of humanity: Where did human beings come from? What exactly does modern evolutionary science tell us about our ancestry? Were there human-like creatures before Adam? Was Adam biologically related to other hominids? And does accepting evolution conflict with the Qur’an?
Dr. Shoaib Malik explains his theory of Adamic Exceptionalism, a framework for understanding Adam within the scientific evidence for human evolution while preserving the theological significance of Adam in Islam. Also…are humans related to monkeys or apes?
From Al-Ghazali and Islamic philosophy to genetics, common ancestry, apes, hominids, and endogenous retroviruses (ERVs), we explore where Islamic theology and evolutionary biology overlap — and where the limits of science may begin.
We also discuss whether believing in evolution is haram, whether there can be such a thing as “Islamic science,” the relationship between humans and jinn, historical Islamic discussions surrounding the Queen of Sheba, and some of the stranger questions surrounding human origins.
Can Muslims accept evolution?
Did humans evolve from apes?
Were there other human species before Adam?
Was Adam the first Homo sapiens?
Can the Qur’an and modern science both be true?
This is a conversation about Islam and science, evolution and religion, Adam and Eve, human evolution, Islamic theology, the Qur’an, genetics, anthropology, and the origins of mankind.

I’ve always looked at Greek and Norse mythology as interaction between Man and Jinn and their offspring. I wonder if I was right in anyway.
Evolution was the third reason I discovered Islam is false.
It is interesting that Muslims are currently progressing accept it and make some how a story about how Islam agreed with it all along 👌🏼 I seriously wish you luck.
Please invite Subbour Ahmad. He is a well known expert on Evolution and Islam
The common ancestor theory is not reconcilable with the Quran. No chance. Evolution might be a possibility, but not in relation to Humans.
This has to be one of the best podcasts you have ever done!! This is so funny and genuinely the best interaction with a guest. I need you both to appear more often together. I love the way you both interact with each other, it's really refreshing, raw and hilarious at the same time. The decision was amazing and thought provoking. Please do another one!!!
Brother Mahmud's facial expression was really funny when he heard what ibn taymiayyah said about human-jinn interaction. 😂 I'm from Bangladesh and I can tell you that it's kind of well-known even in my country as many jinns study alongside humans at universities, but they take human-form and may go unnoticed by most students.
Natural selection:
Allah says everything has a condition term
Everything is created in mizan
All creation is following a system balanced by Allah.
What they call natural selection
Is Allahs system.
Like there where a nation who has a appointed time Allah saves the believing one.
These are the ones fitting in the system not destroying the balance while the ones destroying the balance and not surrending theirselfs to the natural system they get wiped out.
Allahs says do they not look on the earth and see what happened to the previous civilization?
So we can see this in the nature this process.
Also different human looking other then other tribes because Allah says that’s a sign for them.
Who is creating these differences so the human or other species survive ? Allah
Like he said do they not look at the camel ?
The camels is perfectly created for its environment.
Only a knowing wisdom having creator is able to create something special for its environment.
Not a living being knowing his environment before even existing.
Allah knows best.
Not to refute Dr Malik, I'm sure his scholarship is profound, but a small correction needs to be made. Ibn e Miskawayh gave an evolutionary theory in eleventh century. Even the theory of natural selection is not unique to Darwin, Al Jahiz gave a similar theory in 9th century. However, none of them were given in the form of conspiracy-esque manner like Darwin, who wrote it in a gotcha manner where natural selection is blind, mathematical, Godless and coldblooded. It's not a new concept, it's a corrupted concept
6:41, that is the foundational wrong message that has been spread. That they had all the answers. When Averroes spoke they burnt his books. They are still paying the price to today and yet continue defending their confusion.
Yeah! I cannot link with his train of thought! Much respect to him though
I was literally praying to Allah SWT for clarity on this!!! As a revert, I needed this. Thank you! Masha Allah! May Allah SWT reward you for spreading knowledge!
Akhi, I would love to see a podcast on this topic with Dr Eyad Qunaibi.
HafidakAllah, it would be very interesting for your listeners to see the opinions on the other side of the spectrum…
Disappointing that the interviewer is not knowledgeable enough to ask questions befitting the honourable guest.
,,,I think there is A Quranic vearse ( Al _ Isra 17;88}wbich shows humans and Jinn may have had some kind of INTERACTION where it statesE EVEN IF HUMANS COLOBERATED WITH JINN,,,,Therefore there is possibilty of even marriage between them,,,Someone help me if i am wrong,,
,,I came a cross a concept which states if you went backbawards on the human tree from the base( this present time) up the pyramid you will have a common ancestors perodically and as we reach apex we will ALL have ONLY TWO,,😮 What do you say on that,,
“The first gulp from the glass of natural sciences will turn you into an atheist, but at the bottom of the glass God is waiting for you” WERNER HEISENBERG, Pioneer of Quantum physics
Uh, jinn do not exist. And Dr. Malik uses the standard high school chemistry example where an acid and a base yield salt and water regardless of the experimenter's worldview. He argues that while the naturalist sees only chemical reactions, the theist sees God as the "primary cause" upholding the "laws of nature."
However this is a textbook violation of Occam’s razor. If the chemical equations, thermodynamic gradients, and molecular mechanics fully describe and predict the reaction without remainder, inserting a divine "lawgiver" provides zero explanatory power and zero testable predictions.
Malik then says "Does Allah have access to that coin toss? Of course he has… There's nothing inherently within these processes that eliminates Allah."
First off, "Random" in evolutionary biology does not mean uncaused it just means mutations are stochastic with respect to fitness they do not occur in anticipation of an organism’s needs. Claiming an omniscient entity is secretly directing every cytosine-to-thymine deamination behind an impenetrable veil of apparent randomness makes God indistinguishable from pure statistical noise. It is an unfalsifiable, decorative hypothesis.
Dr. Malik deserves credit for his scientific integrity regarding human-chimp ancestry. He does a decent job at explaining various evidences for common ancestry. Yet notice what happens next. Because scripture mandates an actual historical Adam and Eve, Malik cannot accept the obvious scientific conclusion: modern humans evolved as an entire interbreeding population that never bottlenecked down to a single founding pair.
He is pushing "Adamic Exceptionalism". This is inherently unscientific. Adam and Eve were magically, de novo creations. And then Adam's lineage then interbred with existing evolved hominins (Neanderthals, Denisovans, archaic Homo sapiens), etc. This is a breathtaking post-hoc rationalization. It accepts 99% of evolutionary genetics only to carve out an ad-hoc, empirically invisible miracle for one specific hominin couple. In science, you alter your hypothesis to fit the evidence while in theology, you alter the narrative to insulate the dogma.
You are demontrating EXACTLY why science and religion cannot mix. They both hold contradictory conclusions.
And then we get to jinn… Forget science at that point. He says something along the lines of "If we’ve had such a massive precedent like this within our tradition [humans breeding with jinn]… us entertaining us breeding with other hominins is a piece of cake."
Using medieval juristic disputes about whether humans can copulate with jinn as precedent for biological hominin admixture is an intellectual disaster. It conflates empirical anthropology with folkloric demonology. The fact that classical scholars debated whether marrying a jinn was halal or haram tells us everything about human superstition and NOTHING about biology.
Dr. Haitham Talaat is one of the most prominent critics of the theory of evolution; try to host him.

Автор, спасибо за то, что включили автоперевод😘😘😘👏👏👏👏💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼
Maybe when ibn taymiya said “mash’hour” he meant the idea or the myth or the concept is mash’hour. But does that mean that it has happened or is possible?
I don't agree with him, Helium is Helium but science is not, in general you need a methodology for cartography for example (different Sciences) science is a compound and in that methodology muslim scientists (renaissance researchers were brilliant and they were are because what Ansari is saying …the paradigm am not saying others are not but like Edison said we are standing on the shoulders of giants…."I don't really like Edison because he harmed an elephant!! In one of his experiments!! We should have moral parameters as well in scientific quests, know why and to whom, transfer this knowledge and that is an emparative in Islam
Maybe Adam was the first god conscious hominid and we all descend from him
My wife is a Jinn.
I am often with my Jinn and Juice.
Islam interprets Adam literally as Nabi Adam. Same with Noahs flood Nabi Nuh. In that respect they are like US evangelists. Adam the name means from the soil. Australian Aboriginals say the same thing in their dreamtime stories. It just means we were always here. No matter how much evidence they are faced with if it contradicts a believe system please lecture a brick wall. I am myself a practicing Catholic and we have no problem with evolution or modern physics. Darwinism became Neo Darwinism the combined theories of Darwin and Mendel, Mendel was an Augustin friar. Big Bang Lemaitre a Jesuit.
Thank you for your great work. Jazaq khair. Keep it up ❤️
@theansaripodcast – you need to interview a rakhi (jinn exorcist) they will tell you. There’s a great sheikh online on the Al Maghrib podcast recently (@ImamAmmarShahin) who is also a rakhi who spoke extensively about jinn
– he talked more about jinn transforming into walking talking humans with whole families. You need to interview him!
This is how they do black magic, magicians (sahir) ‘mate’ with jinn – same thing Hindus call tantric s*x, they allow spiritual entities into their bodies, it’s a ritual, then they get favours from them. I don’t know if they can produce off spring, if it’s possible – ask the rakhi.
Also to learn more about jinn and alien connection there are brothers on the epistemix channel and iRep channel who explore this – also great to interview.
Modern evolution is an explanatory framework based on randomness not the wisdom design by Almighty. The brother leading the podcast has no background in science so difficult for him to challenge any of propositions making it a monologue in reality. I would recommend the journey to certainly series by Dr. EYAD QUnaibi comprehensively addressing the evolution topic https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPqH38Ki1fy3EB-8xmShVqpbQw99Do2B-&si=NemhZMSAnjGoGHvw

You are already aware of those of you who broke the Sabbath. We said to them, “Be disgraced apes!”1
Salam ask atheist who is doing Evolution .
some humans were punished & Allah turned them to amimals may be thats the reason we have part of dna
jinns falling in love with human is nothing new
Recycling Islamic apologetic scholarship is not a ground breaking idea. The only people who reported they interbred with Jinn were known to be mentally sick people and nobody ever reported a family of that mix with kids.
This guy has shown up in many podcasts. The most interesting question is never asked which is how did you have the patience, perseverance, and time to do two PhDs? And to elaborate on those experiences
Mahmoud looks nervous with this line of questioning like 10:23 like a joke building up 😂😂😂 MashaAllah 🤲🏾 thanking Allah for laughter in this dunya 😂
Ibn Khaldun stated the base of EVOLUTION, but you need to read it in the original Arabic text.
let me tell you something interesting,
my father used to live in a rural area of faridpur, bangladesh. one of his maternal grandpa was the biggest imam of that area who used to teach human and jinns together. my father used to tell me, once he was going for maghrib prayer with his grandpha and his grandhpa was spitting repeatedly on the road and was telling my father "cant you smell the odor of the jinns around you rumi?"
that granpha once told my father that the jinns passageway goes through this area, and he is in consultation with them to change it slightly which he eventually did.
most interesting part was, the madrasa of my father grandpa, a boy used to come and learn, play with other kids studying, hanging out. but nobody knew his family or where he came from. my father told me that somehow he heard that the kids mother is human and father is jinn thats why he is so different mostly showing up during nighttime, quiet most of the time.
sometime later my father came back to his home in dhaka and when he got back again and ask for that kids whereabouts, the kid had died and my father was told that many such cases happens and jinn/human kids dont live that long. they die really early.
my father also told me his encounter about lighting orbs, sounds, things moving in the air, vanishing and appearing of an old man in his bedroom at that place.
idk or care if all of this are horseshit or not, but was really really interesting for me to hear

1:08:00 overall good interview thank you very much
I tend to fall in with the Dr David Berlisnki on this. His overall view, in summary, according to my understanding is when the fossil record doesn’t show the expected gradual transitions, evolutionary biologists introduce new concepts (punctuated equilibrium, bushy trees, earlier tracks) that preserve the theory but are more narrative than evidential and hard to verify.
I also think that Muslims who try to bend QUran to fit with human evolution miss the point – Allah is not bound by the rules of physics. If He ordained it for Jesus/Isa (AS) to be born without a father (completely outside of scientific premises), then He could also have intervened with the miracle of humanities creation.
1:05:51 so the host is speaking or giving his opinions and ideas and a lot of those opinions and ideas and theories sound like the ideas of a child because it does not seem like he has much understanding or education or knowledge in cosmology or even physics or evolutionary biology so what he should do to move his knowledge base to a higher level is to do some focused study in science and history, he can spend a few days or weeks learning about evolutionary biology from subject matter experts from people with high degrees in that field, also you can spend a few weeks learning, cosmology or astronomy from people with degrees in that field so after a
1:00:42 social Darwinism was not made by scientist. This was created by racist, religious people, and has zero scientific backing, or something to be scientific that has to be data and evidence, if it doesn’t have large amount of data and evidence that it is not scientific it is just conjecture thoughts or ideas
55:08 for Muslims to go out and dig into the Earth. They would first need to get a degree in archaeology or paleontology or anthropology and when they go and get the degree, they learn that evolution is not 100% but over six 700% fact due to independent, totally separate lines of evidence and most of them end up, leaving whatever their religion was and and in this case they would leave Islam
Your ideas doesn't seem to present Islam in a conservative ways even if you insist on those 4 theories it opens doors for other explanations
35:50 so a highly educated person like Dr Shohaib has to accept ridiculous folklore of jinns sleeping with humans as actual history , very very sad, they used to be an anti-drug commercial back in the 90s where they used to show a hot frying pan with oil as drugs, and then they show an egg and label that as the brain, then they will crack the egg and put it in the frying pan and say this is your brain on drugs, basically saying drugs, fry your brain, over here it looks like a religion is the hot frying pan, which fries the brains of intelligent people.
34:41 so the only reason for Adam exceptionalism is their religious stories not any shred of scientific evidence for that, this is apologetics , working your stories into today’s scientific understanding
