The fart analogy was pretty good it reminds me of the really weird Japanese short in the abc’s of death where people were just farting and.. yeah😂 idk that must be a sense of humor that is held onto more there I won’t say fart jokes or things aren’t funny but a little can go a long way in horror I’d imagine, I still think I’d check it out just for the heck of it😂
J-horror is the best out there. It brings a creepyness factor that other countries just cant seem to match.
You can put literally any item in front of a J-horror writer and they can come up with the scariest story surrounding that one object.
Most ghost movies follow pretty much the same formula and have to rely on jump scares to make the movies scary. But not J-horror ghost story movies. They just have a way of using light, shadow, and directing that turns the audiences minds against them, making them think "jeeze, did i just see what i thought i saw? My minds playing tricks on me." And that creep factor is far more scary than any jump scare.
As you described the scene where she slides in and out of the painting for an uncomfortable amount of time, my brain started filing through the Rolodex of bizarre Japanese rituals I’ve heard from your and other channels…. All with no explanation (because there’s an odd theme of “parents or our parents’ parents didn’t say why before they died”) ….
And yeah no. No explanation here.
Haven’t watched it, but if anything.. as I type this out it’s like the director kinda wanted it to be quite on the nose of how… taboo it is to watch happen.

I saw this at San Diego Asian Film Fest and it was a wild ride! Yuriyan Retriever did a special Q&A in almost all English. She did say some of the scenes were based off of past romances. She also thanked those that saw deeper themes on love and women. I think the film fest did record the Q&A but not sure if they uploaded it on the Pacific Arts Movement YT
Just when I finally worked up the courage to dive headfirst into the lore of Ringu and *Ju-On*… After rewriting the fight scene from the 2016 film *Sadako vs. Kayako*—which I felt favored Sadako—I really dug into the books and background material on the creation of both curses. I’m even starting to lose my fear of Kayako’s signature rattling sound (which was actually created by the director himself). I even came up with a sequel concept for the 2016 movie that respects the lore of both curses without playing favorites. It’s a shame the cast has aged ten years since then, though Takako Fuji would have made a special appearance in my version, titled *Sadako vs. Kayako: Yome no Sekai*.
Well, I can think of one reason they wouldn't want the English title being Maga.
