Former Navy F-18 pilot Austin Hulbert and his weapons systems officer called it a balloon and moved on. Years later, Austin started building stratospheric balloons for the military. That explanation no longer made sense to him.
I sit down with Austin, one of my instructors during Navy flight training, to revisit his encounter off the coast of Virginia Beach and what changed his mind. We discuss what he remembers seeing, what the radar was tracking, and why neither crew member thought much of it at the time.
Austin also takes us inside his career in naval aviation and special operations, the return of balloons to modern warfare, and the challenge of detecting objects our air defenses weren’t built to find. Throughout the conversation, we return to a question familiar to many military aviators: What gets missed when pilots dismiss something they can’t explain?

"Former NASA astronaut Scott Kelly is no stranger to the skies.
Kelly, a four-time spaceflyer, one-time space shuttle pilot and three-time International Space Station commander, was a participant in the first public meeting of the NASA study group formed to examine data related to unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), a new term for sightings of objects or occurrences in the sky, underwater or in space that can't be immediately explained or identified.
The meeting, held on Wednesday (May 31), saw experts from a wide variety of fields present both analyses of UAP sightings and proposals on how NASA and other government agencies might go about collecting better data to help shine a light on the UAP topic.
At one point in the meeting, after remaining largely silent, Kelly, a former U.S. Navy captain, stood up to share a UAP experience he had while flying an F-14 Tomcat. "I remember one time I was flying in the warning areas off of the Virginia Beach military operating area there," Kelly said. "And my RIO [radar intercept officer] thought — the guy that sits in the back of the Tomcat — was convinced we flew by a UFO. So I didn't see it. We turned around and went to go look at it.
"It turns out it was Bart Simpson, a balloon."

It's funny how so many post their anecdotal sci-fi fantasies here and expect to be taken seriously by anyone outside of their echo chamber.
I was in spring hill ks 30 years ago and seen a black diamond shape craft going very slow right below the cloud line. It then turned and went straight up very slow and dissapeared into the cloud cover. Its was very close and completely silent.

On July 18th, 2014 04:14am I went out for a quick smoke (half a ciggie) before watching F-1 Practice (Hockenheim, a favorite 8D). After 4 minutes, walking back to my porch and looking up at the sky (to see if Orion or any Planets were passing above my house, as they do) I noticed 8-12 star-like objects moving in a loose, irregular formation southwards towards Catalina Island off the California coast near Los Angeles. I said to myself '"What the hell?" and stopped walking so I could look closely at what I was seeing. As soon as I stopped to get a good look, these separate 'dots' all came together into one and immediately exploded apart in various directions (it looked JUST like when u beat 'Star Castle' and the ship explodes O_o). Each 'dot' went in a different direction AND at different speeds, the fastest shot off due west at 'shooting star' speed maybe mach 5 or 6, the others at other mach plus speeds too, but slower and with no sonic-booms O_O, not one sonic-boom. All sped away except for three, two continued due southwards and one to the north very slowly, like satellite speed, I watched them for 90 seconds or so until they disappeared into the haze at about 40 degrees. @_@ I have watched planes on approach for landing at LA International ALL my life and am very much an aviation enthusiast, I believe these MAY have been tic-tac UFOs.
About 10-11 years ago, over the Long Island Sound, around 3 in the AM I observed a slow moving, tic-tac shaped object hovering just below the cloud line. It approached slowly and zig-zagged a few times. After about 10 seconds it started to emit some kind of orange, blue electrical discharge. It then shot straight up real quick and disappeared. Wanted to grab my phone but it all happened so damn fast.
Probably just a balloon.
