No Bike Lane? Do this.

This is called lane filtering. It’s very safe and is nothing like lane splitting. Essentially, if vehicle traffic is travelling under 10km/h, you can just pedal on past said traffic.

It’s also a wonderful way of making those drivers envious of your freedom on awesometacular bicycle of yours! Get out there and show drivers how much fun biking is! Cheers 🙂

  1. Drivers really don't anticipate people going cyclist speed on the sidewalk. Last March, when my bus was turning from Bradley to Adelaide, I saw this one dude I'd always see riding on the sidewalk laying on the road. My guess is he got hit by a card turning right onto Bradley.

  2. Filtering on the passenger side used to be (still is?) recommended in the UK. I don't think it's safe though, drivers are too prone to move towards the passenger side without looking. They think that side is "safe" because you won't get another car there. That's why passing on the passenger side is generally illegal on multilane roads. As a motorcyclist I learnt to filter on the driver side (filtering is legal in UK) and I've followed the same practice over onto the pedal bike. It's not hard to move across if the traffic starts moving.

  3. As a bike commuter, I love when car traffic is backed up like this, it makes roads a lot safer to ride on. And I get to feel all smug because I don't have to wait and they all do 😛

  4. I love the intersection trick, there was 1 where I used to live no bike infrastructure and a narrow busy bridge, just past a very busy high traffic intersection.

I would wait about 2 third the way back to the previous intersection in a driveway or a parking lot, and the second it went green I'd start towards the intersection, getting to it just before it turns red after all the traffic has cleared and before turning traffic is released, with enough momentum to propel myself up the bridge before the light turned green for turning traffic allowing me to being the easy desent as traffic entered the bridge again

Never had to slow them down, and had the 4 lane bridge practically to myself (and never ran a red light)

  5. As a fellow Londoner, please amplify it for the other cyclists: Stay off our sidewalks! So many cyclists in this community refuse to follow any rules, and then they complain that the streets are too dangerous….

  6. It's absolutely safer to bike on side walk… not even debatable. What's more dangerous, a bicycle hitting a walker or bicycle getting hit by a car?? You're crazy for saying the road is safer.

  7. I almost got hospitalized by a robust, rotund individual flying down a hill on their bike. They thought it would be a good idea to ride downhill, not making a single noise, on a sidewalk, and just hope they missed me. Made me a supporter of bicycle infrastructure in a heartbeat.

  8. Roads are for vehicles, not pedestrians. I get that technically, bicycles are somehow considered vehicles even without the responsibility and requirements. The safest place for all involved is for cyclists to remain on the sidewalk.

If you insist on riding in the roadway, you must obey all traffic laws at all times. including the flow of traffic, direction, and lane management.

Also, remember that in most places you are required to walk your bike across any street.
