Star Ocean: The Second Story R takes one of tri-Ace’s most systems-heavy JRPGs and turns it into a gorgeous modern remake without sanding away the wonderfully breakable mechanics that made Star Ocean 2 special.
In this review, I look at the 2.5D presentation, fast real-time combat, Claude and Rena’s dual-protagonist structure, Private Actions, Motoi Sakuraba’s soundtrack, and especially the incredible Item Creation system — from Replication and publishing royalties to Counterfeit Medals, Training, Scouting and Bodyguard.
Fabled Cartridge rating: 9.5/10 — S Tier — #5 overall.
