Why Don’t We Have Cryosleep Yet?

Why don’t we have cryosleep yet? You know, freezing people and waking them up later. Turns out, the problem is WATER.

Our bodies are filled with water. But when water freezes, it expands and forms sharp crystals. If we froze you right now, those ice crystals would shred ya to bits from the inside! To freeze you without shredding you, we’d need to replace most of that water with special antifreeze – and cool it all down quickly and evenly, turning that antifreeze mixture solid in a process called “vitrification,” end effectively pausing your body in time.
But unfortunately, you’re the wrong shape. Right now you’d either end up full of warm toxic antifreeze, or full of frozen deadly crystals. The math just doesn’t work yet. But the math DOES work for tiny cells like human eggs and embryos.

  1. I would not mind sleeping thru the winter some years or sleeping weeks to save money between jobs – wait I could be homeless and move from a cold shelter area to warmer for free then from hot to cooler shelter – problem solved

  2. I guess what these people are saying is that they are betting on the development of future tech, so undergoing cryonics would be a bet on future tech reviving the person, not current technology developed in our lifetimes.

There's a piece by Tim Urban called "Why Cryonics Makes Sense" which discusses the topic further.

Cryonics proponents say that a 0.000001% of revival is better than 0%.

But I am still highly skeptical, even in the infinitesimal chance this will work, I can think of better ways of spending my money (even if it's payable with 30 bucks a month life insurance)

    Cheers.

  3. Imagine getting sick in cryosleep and not knowing it I don't know how well your health would be monitored so say your immune system suppressed or whatever and virus and deadly diseases are a higher risk and you're sleeping Lol. I don't know if this would be true

  4. The one problem is also the long term affects. Almost done if some right. Can't be Russian on this; this matters too much. Sorry not sorry some of you just ain't Grown up enough even after 55 plus come on someone is watching to be you & do your actions.

  5. Thing is… we could totally do something that's 'as good' as cryo. That is a combination of artificial hibernation and rejuvenation. The intact genes could be slotted into the genome of humans, and a chemical trigger could be used to initiate it. Though it would have to be one humans don't produce naturally but can easily handle. As for the rejuvenation part… well once we can readily make and control pluri-potent or omni-potent stem cells, that's basically all we'd need.
