We got our first BIG ol WOLVERINE Episode of X-Men 97! And it brought us THE BROOD! Not only did Wolverine get his adamantium back, but this ep felt like an issue right out of his solo series. Garrison Kane? Sabretooth? Maverick?!! OMEGA RED?! Hell yeah! Didn’t quite reach the heights the rest of the season has so far it was cool to see the canucklehead being the best he is at what he does.

The second season of the American animated television series X-Men ’97 is based on the Marvel Comics superhero team X-Men. The series is a revival of X-Men: The Animated Series (1992–1997), continuing the story of the X-Men. In the season, the X-Men are scattered throughout time—from Ancient Egypt to the far future—and must find their way back to the 1990s to stop Apocalypse. It is produced by Marvel Studios Animation, with Beau DeMayo as head writer and Jake Castorena as supervising director.

Ray Chase, Jennifer Hale, Alison Sealy-Smith, Cal Dodd, J. P. Karliak, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Isaac Robinson-Smith, Matthew Waterson, Ross Marquand, and Adrian Hough star as members of the X-Men. Sealy-Smith, Dodd, Zann, Buza, and Hough reprised their roles from the original series. Work on the season began by July 2022, with DeMayo and Castorena returning. Voice recording began by February 2023, writing was completed by March 2024, and animation work was underway by then. DeMayo was fired by Marvel at that time and Matthew Chauncey was hired to replace him as head writer in July. Chauncey oversaw rewrites for the season.

The season is scheduled to premiere on July 1, 2026, on the streaming service Disney+, and will consist of nine episodes. A third season was confirmed in March 2024.[1][2]

  1. Morph's arc in this episode is really the highlight and focal point for me. I think this was finally the breaking point of them taking off the rose-colored glasses and realizing that Logan's never gonna want anything or anyone more than he wants his adamantium or Jean… and that was heartbreaking. But, it also allows Morph to grow and learn how to be their hero instead of just being Wolverine's shadow and that excites me

  2. The Brood Suck as much as Morph does instead of Exiles or AOA comics style Morph we got Beau DeMayo DEI Woke Cameo for other characters Motph. Mystique would’ve been much better a non binary shapeshifter and added a complexity to Nightcrawler especially if Destiny was brought in as his mama they dropped the ball on that and not having this wolverine be a skrull and apocalypse turn the real one into a horseman

  3. Why is no one bringing up the fact that wolverine did lie to get him there and he really only went there for his adamantium? That's the part of the story that made me love this episode that they made his character gray instead of black and white. I know he always is but still. Or did I get that part of the episode wrong? 😅

  4. I had issues with the writing.
-why is morph going on a black ops suicide mission when he ALREADY HAS PTSD
-has lady deathstrike been part of weapon x?
-why would Logan invited sabertooth and deathstrike
-why would deathstrike and sabertooth accept Logan’s invite
-we know Wolverine is he a killer, since when has he ever been a liar or a manipulator?

    Something is a miss

  5. I loved everything about this episode except the actual story. I hate that they just re-adamantium'd Logan the first chance they got. What was even the point of him losing the metal if that was the case? I think it cheapens the moment when it happened last season. At the time, I thought it would set up all kinds of interesting stories. We've seen so much of the civilized Logan in the movies that I was excited to see the other side of him on the animated side of things. But instead they just reversed the decision as soon as they could. It feels as if they could have just held either this episode or the whole "Magneto rips the adamantium out of Logan" thing until there was time to actually tell a compelling story with the consequences of it, but now it feels as if they just needed an exciting cliffhanger for the penultimate episode last season and went with this despite not having any ideas for where to go from there.

But I loved so many other things about this episode. I loved that it was essentially a horror episode with all kinds of Easter eggs for horror fans. I think it was also beautifully animated for the most part. Lots of really cool shots where there didn't need to be anything special. Just eye-candy for the sake of it, which I really, really appreciated.

I also really loved Morph in this episode. Similarly to Jubilee in episode 2, they took a character that I never really vibed with and gave them an episode to really flesh out their character. It made me like Jubs a whole lot more a couple of episodes ago, and the same thing happened here. It really endeared Morph to me, beyond just being the occasional comic relief.

So it was a mixed bag for me, but on the whole there were a lot more things that I liked than I disliked. I just happened to dislike one of the central stories, which was a shame.

On a closing side note, I gotta mention a funny thing about our respective experience with the Wolverine comics of our youths. I have the complete opposite view of the savage Wolverine saga compared to you. In Sweden, we had very few long-running Marvel comic books. Instead, we had a single mega-sized Marvel comic that collected the best stories from around Marvel on a monthly basis. So one month, it could be a Thor story and the next, an X-Men one, or an Avengers one, or a Venom one etc. Whatever – in all of Marvel – that had been a good read lately. We did have a long-running Spider-Man comic so I felt the same exhaustion with the clone saga as everyone else who followed it in its entirety, but when it came to the savage Wolverine saga, I only really got the best bits of it. So I remember that time and those stories very positively and didn't get the same "this drags on way too long" feeling that you're describing.

  6. Coy, you made me sigh with relief, I thought I was being a hater for a second. I didn't much care for this episode and the deaths felt gratuitous. I did appreciate the break but I think Wolverine deserved a better story. This is definitely my least favorite episode but I love everything Morph does, so there was a bright spot.

  7. I like how this was a direct sequel to the X-Men ep “Weapon X, Lies, and Video Tape” from June 11th, 1995. This ep was amazing bro. Wolverine merkin Maverick was harsh

  8. I actually feel this was more of a Morphcentric episode. Morph is in love with Wolverine, but at the end of the episode he doesn’t know how to deal with what Wolverine is at his core.

  9. Curious to hear your thoughts about onslaught and how this season only has 9 compared to 10, rumor's are circulating episode 10 was to reveal onslaught.

  10. I used to only care about the main story lines in the shows I love but I’ve grown to like the pallet cleansing off the beat episodes. This being one I enjoyed. The action was good in it. The story telling was fun. Wolverine centric story was fun to follow along with. Overall I really enjoyed it myself.

  11. I'm watching this with my 12 year old daughter and she is relatively new to X-Men and she is ALL IN on the morph-wolverine ship. Toward the end I slowed it down and explained my read of the subtext between the two of them and she was bawling. Completely lost her shit 😂

  12. Yeah that's not Logan. For one he wouldn't lie to any of the x-men and put them at risk just to get adamantiem back. And two theres two story lines in the comics they could've used that involved Apocalypse. One howed how he got his secondary mutation which is the feral look from rejecting the adamantiem and killing Cable's son Tyler cause he became a follower of Apocalypse and was trying to turn Logan into a weapon form him. The second story line he got his Adamantiem back and became the horseman death and killed the skrull pretending to Logan. Im saying this is probably the Skrull and if its not . To me this horrible story telling and doing my dude dirty with his character especially after he killed Maverick and showing no remorse. Im not saying he is a saint and I know he more in the grey area and would kill if need be and has killed a whole lot of people but him and Maverick go way back and good friends. He would've felt bad. And he always feels is the best of whst he do with or without Adamantiem. So either going the skrull route or they not writing his character right

  13. Having a voiceless villain after the masterpiece that was apocalypse was really tough. I think this would’ve worked a little better if there were more horror flick jump scares and maybe if it was a little bit longer so the omega red/adamantium refill didn’t feel forced.

  14. I did like that they broke up the season a bit with the episode with the heavy dire episodes prior to this one. Now they can get back into the story of apacalypse.

  15. Morph is a bad character. He turns into swords?? He can Puck or Sasquatch.. can he use every power in the Marvel Universe??? And why did sabertooth and lady deathstrike help Wolverine?? They despise him. Worst episode of both seasons

  16. "Feral" Wolverine was NOT because Magneto ripped out the adamantium. Feral Wolverine happened 2 years later when Genesis (Cable's kid) tried to forcefully rebond the adamantium and that attempt failed. That trauma broke him and thus the "feral" version.

  17. I liked how this episode gave us room to breathe from the main plot and we got to go off and explore other characters. Variety is the spice of life. It’s nice to sometimes take a beat and get something different.

  18. I agree with some people saying that Wolverine got his claws back too soon. I would have preferred for them to use a Wolverine-centered episode to prove that Wolverine is still a great warrior even without any reliance on having to keep being "the claw guy". However, I disagree with some people saying it was a weak episode all around. Just because something could technically count as a filler episode doesn't mean it's bad. Taking a break from the larger plot is necessary in every long-running tv show. And as far as filler episodes go, I liked this one a hell of a lot better than the filler Mojo video game world episode from season 1. Which is surprising for me, seeing as I am more attached to Jubilee than I am to Logan most of the time.

  19. To me this episode, while it still had some emotional hit, was meant to be more a fun adventure and a way to get Wolverine back to full cutlery. They're not gonna break us in every episode. It's a cartoon, we need to just see old references and weird, fun action sometimes, ya know.

  20. I'm going to suggest that this was not a Wolverine episode. Stuff happened to Wolverine, sure. The character who made things happen, though, was Morph. This was all a Morph pov episode. He was largely in charge, keeping everyone from killing one another, and just being the anchor while everyone else was more interested in fighting. He was the narrator, for the most part. It also demonstrated that he was able to keep his cool and focus in a group of what largely are murderous sociopaths.

  21. A very bad and very emberassing episode , the episode didnt focus on wolverine at all, this was a Morph episode. This was 10000000% written by a woma. This is not wolverine, wolverine is not a liar

  22. The whole “Adamantium Poisoning “ does not happen in the comics like everyone and casuals think. He’s had that in so very FEW comics…….it doesn’t really amount to much. People die on that hill lol

  23. I didn’t like how they offed Kane and Maverick. I remember Kane from the Six Pack and Maverick from Weapon X. But they NEVER show Maverick’s power to absorb impact and turn it into power blasts

  24. A poor episode, very poor, in fact. I’m not sure whether DeMayo’s absence is to blame, but the script feels noticeably weak.

Whenever Emmett yonemura is out of the game, the ball is dropped…

Lady Deathstrike and Sabretooth’s personalities were smoothed far too much. Are we really supposed to believe they suddenly became partners of Logan?

The solution used to restore Wolverine’s adamantium was also a disappointing shortcut, one that prematurely closed the door on several more interesting possibilities.
