What 4,000L of Rainwater Costs

I built a 4,000-litre, 20-barrel rainwater grid on a suburban plot to beat mains water dependence. In this video, I lay out every cost and fitting across the entire system from blue industrial barrels to tank connectors, silicone, and 19mm manifold lines. I show you the exact prices, the mistakes that cost me extra money, and why building your own heavy-duty grid is far cheaper than buying retail water butts.

  1. Don't forget that by sourcing your own water, you are also not contributing to the 'drought' supply issues. So its not only about saving your garden, its about helping everyone else out. The more self-sufficient we can become as individuals the less the system is oversubscribed.

  2. god damn thats an ugly garden though. cant you do a raised paving somewhere and hide those barrels. If you read up on concepts like permaculture, beauty is important to a successful self sustaining system

  3. When you think about it. For the people that moan about the water bill. You can bury your dumps and disinfect your rain water. The price we pay for water and waste water removal it is absolutely nothing as we can't live without it, it comes clean and free of pathogens for consumption. Other bills like council tax, income tax and energy bills are the real joke.

  4. The YT algorithm is working in my favour. What a brilliant video! I love all the data and detailed advice you give. Really appreciate it. Got 4 unlinked watter butts/barrels but want to expand round my small garden and try drip irrigation. I know how to do it now. Will watch more and check your website. Thank you!

  5. I have a number of IBC thanks, 12v pressure switched water pump, straight into the toilet. Few valves etc but it's been running for years and I've saved around 40k litres so far, excluding what I use to water the garden.

  6. You are my hero. You sound like you have become so educated in fluid dynamics. Is this what you do for a job?
So, if you use rainwater to wash your car, does it mean that no limescale will form?
What I need to know is how to capture rainwater and then use it for flushing my toilet.

  7. Just so you know, watering of food crops is exempt from hosepipe bans, at least in Yorkshire Water regions. I still intend to start storing my own rainwater though!

Good system. Well done for keeping such a tight budget

  8. Ziggy you ever heard of water hammer effect? it's how the egyptians produced electricity, also this is what tesla was working on with his wardenclyffe tower after finding out how the egyptians did it, maybe give it a go yourself as you got all that water, you just need a ram pump or make one.

  9. With the Devastating heat wave we've had in the UK and it will get even worse EVERY year that comes after, It would be wise to have your own private back up source of water for your plants during the hot summer time when water is scarce.

  10. Like your set up but you need to consider putting your pipe under the soil. Optimally you should irrigate at least 20 mm below but deeper is better. Also you need to have at least 50mm mulch over the top. Water system is great but a big and growing danger is rapid soil evaporation, particularly over the 4 month summer drought. All the best

  11. our water bill has gone from £40 per month to literally double £80 within the span of 3 or 4 years! its insane! and our water use has not increased by that much more! its crazy
