What Happened to the German U-Boats after the Second World War? #history #ww2 #germany

On 8 May 1945 the British Admiralty ordered the surrender of every German submarine, and the researcher Derek Waller has counted 156 U-boats surrendered at sea or taken in their own bases. Many more never reached an Allied port: despite Karl Dönitz rescinding Operation Regenbogen on 4 May, the naval historian Lawrence Paterson records that 217 commanders scuttled their boats regardless.

The Potsdam Conference then allowed no more than thirty U-boats to be shared among Britain, the United States and the Soviet Union for technical study. The rest were destroyed in Operation Deadlight, towed out to sea north-west of Ireland and sunk between 27 November 1945 and 12 February 1946. The Type XXI they left behind shaped the American GUPPY programme, while a handful of U-boats served on in the Norwegian and French navies into the nineteen-sixties.

  4. I would seriously doubt that they sunk it. Every country wanted their share of technology after the war. It's for lay man like us that they say ….were sunk …..etc

  8. It’s mind boggling to think that at the end of the war there were still well over 100 submarines on active duty. When you think now a days I doubt there are over 100 subs in the NATO fleet.

  12. At the end of World War II, the scientific looting orchestrated by the Allies enabled the United States and the USSR to appropriate formidable German technological advancements. By exfiltrating brilliant minds and recovering the Nazi industry's prototypes, the two superpowers gained decades of research. It was upon these direct foundations (from V2 rockets to the revolutionary blueprints of Type XXI submarines) that the space race (from Apollo missions to early Soviet successes) and the modernization of modern submarine warfare were built. A troubled legacy where science colluded with the chaos of war to shape the Cold War.
