The controversy around OpenAI “solving” a $1m math problem (Navier-Stokes)

OpenAI claims to have solved the Navier-Stokes problem, but others claim their work has been copied. This is an evolving story, and I offer the frontier of that story as known on September 8, 2026. We are all living in history. If OpenAI really solved the $1,000,000 Clay Math Institute Millennium Prize problem, then good on them. But what does that mean for us, or the people OpenAI (potentially) copied?

Also, guys and gals, I’m sorry about my pronunciation; I certainly mispronounced some things because of this video’s rushed production.

Terence Tao weighed in on Stan Palasek providing a possible hole in the OpenAI proposed solution to Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem. Is that solution ripped off of Levet Alpoge

I’m just trying to get to this before @veritasium or @numberphile or @CleoAbram , because this is certainly big if true.

Look at all these sources. I made this video in 7 hours, so if you enjoyed please genuinely consider subscribing. I hope this video made you a little bit more informed.

This is my 4th monetized video, and I tried to make it pretty high quality. That said, I had to move quickly in editing so that I could get the story out to you guys. Also, I’m 16 years old making these videos and am about to start studying at UCLA, so any of your support would be much appreciated.

  1. I reported on this ASAP, with all sources cited, and the situation is still developing. This is the most insane news I think I've ever heard in my 16 years. Also, sorry for the loud music and any of my pronunciation mistakes!
If you want to learn more, I encourage you to watch this deep dive by Alex Hyman: youtu.be/YhMMCs3B47k

    EDIT 1:
Also, I forgot to mention who Grigori Perelman wanted to credit: Richard Hamilton. He deserves credit, and I wish I'd thought to mention it.
Additionally, the cost of the tokens produced by the agents was around $28 million.

    EDIT 2:
per @michaelchurch1324 Lean IS a programming language similar to Haskell, but its primary application is in being a theorem prover/solver.

  2. You sir have made an excellent video. Ive read and listened to a lot on this topic. You answered questions I wanted answers to [the solution is a solution in 2 years time – amongst other things] (without me being in a position to understand ANY of the problem and the solution) AND you told me things I didnt even know I needed to know – Buckmasters comrade was an anthropic employee, openAI learned of this because the pair of them approached an openAI employee. I really dont think buckmaster deserves any credit or money at this point. Apparently the openAI "burn" cost 10 million to "acheive this". Very "openAI" of them.

  3. I'd like to announce that I am close to curing breast cancer. I sure hope Open AI doesn't apply 10,000 agents on finding a cure for breast cancer before I publish it! 🫣

  4. The Navier–Stokes “proofs” people talk about online aren’t proofs of the actual Millennium Problem.

The real question is global existence + smoothness for all time. That means:

Can the equations guarantee no singularities, ever, for every possible initial condition?

And mathematically, they can’t — because the operators that define the equations allow energy to concentrate and blow up. Any proof that tries to forbid that has to quietly change the problem (restrict the domain, smooth the initial data, add artificial constraints, etc.).

So when people say “it’s been solved,” they’re pointing to proofs of modified versions of Navier–Stokes, not the real one.

The original problem remains open because the structure of the equations themselves collapses when you try to enforce global smoothness.

  5. I really never cared about math, nor am I afraid of AI. But wanted to say good work on the video big dawg. You did well at condensing a lot of information in sub 10 minutes. huge. great work son.

  6. Man has thrive for artificial intelligence for so long, they have come to master natural stupidity. I truly believe when man gives his God-given domain over the Earth, to AI, that is when the heavens will fall upon the Earth.

  7. AI is built upon THEFT and is designed to consolidate power and control as well merely keep multibillion dollar semiconductor wafer fabs churning out chips.

I worked in the industry – I know what's happening – humanity is being CONDITIONED to serve Big Tech and their lithography machines and data centers.

    I am not wrong.

  8. love your channel. Can you speak a bit slower in future videos for us non science persons? thanks for high quality video without all the hype etc. or sponsor based sale pitch.

  9. Of course, all platforms of AI should be tightly regulated worldwide. But you can not regulate evil delinquent leaders like those in the US, Israel, Russia, and North Korea. Each wants to outdo the other without regards for humanity. Others like China and India need to build their own to counteract the evil ones.
