Why the V-22 Osprey Is So Complicated

The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is a tiltrotor aircraft that was developed to combine the vertical takeoff and landing capability of a helicopter with the greater speed and range of an airplane.

Making the V-22 work required an incredibly complex design, and getting it into service took decades. The first V-22 flew in 1989, but a series of fatal accidents and technical problems meant the Osprey did not enter operational service until 2007. Since then, it has been used for combat deployments, rescue missions, and disaster relief.

In this Airspeed video, we take a close look at the MV-22B, the Marine Corps transport version of the Osprey, to see how its tiltrotor system works, how it transitions between helicopter and airplane flight, how its unusual folding system works, and why the Marines needed an aircraft that could fly farther and faster than a conventional helicopter.

  1. What surprised you most about the V-22 Osprey? And what aircraft would you like to see us cover next?

All our videos are entirely made by real people who put a lot of time and effort into creating them, including the research, scriptwriting, narration, 3D modeling, animation, editing, and sound design.

Thank you for watching and supporting our work!

  2. This video may have been created by humans, but the commentator is definitely AI. How do I know? Because it’s not “Pro-Protor”, it’s “Prop-Rotor”!! 😂😂😂

  3. Yo 2 days ago another guy copied this entire video Lmfao

It's the same identical video same thumbnail same title everything said basically it's the same

The only difference was that the other made like 50 views

    The camera is flipped too

    It's the same identical video
Just a different voice and camera

I reported the other video hope it helps

Pretty sure all the other channel is just a copy of this one

  4. Interesting to understand the technical requirements that delayed so much the project and brought skepticism when accidents happened. What still intrigues me, though, is how it transitions from "plane-like" levelled flight to a "helicopter-like" hovering state, because it seems really different and more challengin than the opposite flight style, which in turn seems pretty straightforward.

  8. It's easy to fly if you don't have radios and a mission to manage. (The commander at MCAS New River let me "fly" the V-22 high fidelity simulator in full motion mode because he was so pleased with the work I had done on the V-22 program. 😊)

  9. The way the Osprey solved the helicopter speed limit is fascinating, but the drivetrain failures show how costly that complexity became. Decades of development paid off. Next, please cover the F82 Twin Mustang.

  10. First maiden flight 1989. Entered operational service 2007. 2026 – official reviews and watchdog reports highlight severe, ongoing safety risks. Like the F-35, after ~20 years in service, it still has significant issues. Aircraft carriers have major issues long after entering service. The US has BIG problems with it's "high-tech" military.

  11. I found it interesting that the idea of tiltrotors went from tilting the entire wing (X-22) to titling the engine (V-22) to just tilting the rotors (MV-75)
