Buffett Sells Too! The “Buy Forever” Investing Myth Exposed | The N Show

📈 Can a great company eventually become a bad investment? Is “buy and hold forever” one of the most misunderstood ideas in investing? And how can investors identify when a business moves from Good → Great → Gone?

In this insightful episode of The N Show, Neeraj Bajpai sits down with investor and author Ajay Sharma for a deep conversation on the Indian stock market, Warren Buffett’s investing philosophy, valuations, market cycles, AI disruption and the frameworks investors can use to evaluate businesses.

🔍 KEY QUESTIONS DISCUSSED

◆ Why can’t even great companies remain great forever?
◆ Does Warren Buffett really believe in holding every stock forever?
◆ Why is a large part of the Indian market significantly below previous highs even when headline indices tell a different story?
◆ When does an expensive valuation become dangerous?
◆ Can profits grow while shareholders still struggle to make money?
◆ How should investors evaluate competition, disruption and market size?
◆ Are huge mutual fund inflows creating valuation pressure in Indian stocks?
◆ How could AI impact established Indian IT companies?
◆ Where are opportunities emerging across automation, manufacturing, energy and healthcare?

🐟 THE “LAKE & FISH” FRAMEWORK

Ajay Sharma explains investing with a surprisingly simple framework:

“How big is the lake? How many fish are competing in it? Is the lake becoming an ocean? Are new competitors entering?”

From stock exchanges and telecom to paints, technology and energy, this framework provides a simple way to understand market size, competition and competitive advantage.

💰 WARREN BUFFETT & “BUY FOREVER”

The conversation challenges a popular interpretation of Buffett’s philosophy—that every great business should simply be held forever.

Businesses evolve. Valuations change. Competition arrives. Disruption happens. The key question is whether the original investment thesis still holds.

📊 INDIA’S TWO-SPEED MARKET

The index doesn’t always reveal what is happening underneath. Different parts of the Indian stock market can simultaneously be experiencing completely different cycles.

🤖 AI, DISRUPTION & NEW OPPORTUNITIES

The discussion also explores AI, Indian IT services, entrepreneurship, institutional thinking and why disruptive innovation can emerge from younger, unconventional businesses.

📚 GOOD TO GREAT TO GONE

At the heart of the conversation is Ajay Sharma’s framework of Brahma → Vishnu → Mahesh: creation, growth and eventual decline.

In investing, knowing when to say “NO” can sometimes be as important as knowing when to buy.
