Old donuts were solid balls of dough: burned outside, raw inside. The hole lets hot oil reach every part, so the whole ring cooks evenly. 🍩
In 1916, sea captain Hanson Gregory told The Washington Post he invented the hole as a teenager, around 1847. It’s never been fully proven.
