The Beach That Secured D-Day’s Eastern Flank, Sword Beach
British forces landed at Sword Beach on D-Day with orders to secure the eastern flank and push toward the vital city of Caen. The beach was secured and nearby airborne troops held key crossings, but stiff German resistance prevented Caen from falling that day.
