The JPEG compression algorithm is both really simple and really complicated at the same time. But how does it work?

Christ, I've read multiple articles on jpeg before, but this short is probably better than all of them.
So just a bunch of linear añgebra
To think humans just made up with this.. Such right minds.
That first image actually looks better JPEGIFIED imo
I understand the method now
Nice 👍
ffmpeg mentioned
I’m not a journalist, but there has to be a way to gauge whether or not a guest will actually produce a productive conversation or interview. Whatever that process is, it failed horribly here. This was a complete waste of time because the guest did not show up to have a conversation. He is a pure political propagandist. I don’t know if Ezra or anyone from his team or the support staff from The New York Times reads these comments, but I beg you to not waste your time having “civil conversations” with people that would crush your skull under their fascist boot if given a chance.
I wish webp will get more support lately, its really food and universal thing in theory
Coool
Not sure if this guy actually knows what a JPEG is or if he just wants a picture of a got dang hot dog
Ohh that's why whenever we change the extension of a picture forcefully, it doesn't affect the size of it.
Honestly, this technology is pretty much obsolete in the modern age. We're not on dial-up anymore.
"without losing much detail"
Who the fuck thinks of and figures out all this stuff 😭😭😭 damn man.
It definitely didn't occur incredibly quickly in the 1980s.
Nope. 10+ years in tech and never cared.
the moment you zoom in, it looks like absolute dogwater
petition to make all creative software (like krita and all drawing software) to move from rasterized (png and jpeg) to vector (svg)
bunch'a scientific bullshit, got it.
You know… I'm somewhat of a zig-zag myself.
saw the infinite hotels solution had to click
It is all MATHS!🤯
Now I get why so many people told me that I needed math for computer science
I had to learn this for a videogame i was working on, ppl that came with these first were truly wizards of their art
Who figured this out 😭
…until youre zooming in
You lost me at cosine transform
Is it just me or the 40mb photo looks way different the 4mb one?
???
mhm, yes, I will remember all of these terms
The way to do it exploits your brain's inability to see certain differences.
These are mostly Floating Point Operations, not Integers like shown in the Matrixes, and the FPU(Floating Point Unit) in each CPU Core, does this super fast
Wait, its all math?
this is so awesome
This was force-fed to us in engineering college during network & communication technology classes
Universe in my pocket…
Great video. This is why Computer Science will never die.
is…is that Epstein apartment?
what
But now they use wavelet transform
i belive you
Now i get to know where ffmpeg logo came from
Like everything in computers: it's math
so…. encryption and decryption?
"monitizable" – maybe take up spelling bee as a hobby?
Linerar algebra
bro what?
How much jargon can you fit in a 20 second video
Good rule of thumb is that if something looks like dark magic in computer science, that it is incomprehensibly good it is almost always because the Fast Fourier transform is involved
