Heimdall Accidentally Freed Loki With a LEAF

COUNTDOWN TO DOOMSDAY
Every day leading up to Avengers: Doomsday, I’m releasing a Short highlighting one fun fact, story, or weird piece of history about a character who may appear in the movie.

Heimdall’s first Marvel appearance involved him accidentally freeing Loki from prison.

In Journey Into Mystery #85, Odin had trapped Loki inside an enchanted tree. The only way Loki could escape was if someone shed a tear for him.

Unfortunately for Heimdall, Loki found a loophole.

As Heimdall walked past, Loki caused a leaf to fall directly into his eye. Heimdall’s eye watered, a tear fell, and that was apparently enough to satisfy Odin’s spell.

So Heimdall — the guy famous for being able to see basically everything coming — accidentally freed the God of Mischief because he got a leaf in his eye.

Journey Into Mystery #85 was released in 1962 and also marked the first Marvel appearances of Heimdall, Loki, Asgard, and several other major pieces of Thor’s mythology. Marvel Share
