GIVI D5124B and BMW R-1250GS/A windscreen – Windshield – Screen – Wind deflector. Motorcycle turbulence, Motorcycle wind buffeting, Screen Turbulence and motorbike aerodynamics.
After 5 years of trying many different windscreen designs with the aim of reducing low frequency wind noise… finally I have a found a windscreen that works really well. But it does need a small modification to the lower mounting points to allow a small amount of air to reach inside the cockpit area to reduce negative air pressure.
You will need some readily available small parts to complete the project ( M6 spacers and some appropriate longer bolts ) and some time for testing and adjusting the height increase on the lower mounts… but it is definitely worth your time.
The GIVI D5124B has worked really well and for me it has provided 2 important benefits. Zero low frequency noise and zero buffeting or turbulent air flow around the rider’s helmet.

I bought reinforcement brackets for the windshield to stop wiggling from Aliexpress 1 year ago and it was the best decission. I chose these because one of the plastic supports that slides along the windshield adjustment mechanism broke. I highly recommend them and they are pretty cheap
Why does BMW not do more work in wind tunnels? It shouldn’t need to be up to us to do their job. I have an XR and the original screen is miserable. I’ve put a Wunderlich sport screen on, which is excellent, but I now need a winter screen – same 2 screen idea as you. Currently thinking Wunderlich Marathon. At least they offer a return policy if you don’t like it. Great vid.
I sorted the wind noise on my Yamaha 900 Tracer, replaced it with mechanical noise which now annoys me, though hearing is safe.
Hi Carl. Thank you so much for the valuable videos you upload. They have helped me a lot since I tinker a lot with my BMW R1250GSA. I see that right above your headlight, you have screwed a bar/mount for your action camera. Did this force you to open up the gap at the bottom of the windshield even further using the spacers? Aside from the stock windshield, I have also bought the Z-Technik one, which provides great wind protection for my helmet, but I am facing buffeting issues behind the screen. So, I am thinking of trying your mod on the stock windshield (I have the Wunderlich brackets installed).

Carl, if this solves the whinning noise above 55-58mph on my 1250GS like yours, I'll be delighted. It's got to me so bad, it irritates me so much it's almost unrideable (my ears got more sensitive), the high pitch is very annoying. I started going down a path of figuring out where that whinning is coming from and I thought the spoked wheels (HP model) also produce a resonance. But I'm convinced it's almost purely aero-related over the nose/windscreen because when I lean the bike over at the same speed on a long sweeping corner, the whine stops. I was ready to start doing a designed experiment with different taped portions of the entire front of the bike to pinpoint which airflow passage contributes the most. Thank you sir for the video
I think that what you want is a two passanger car, since the turbulence may also be induced by you helmet. Why don’t you talk about your equipment. Regardless of your perspective the nature of a motorcycle is to be a windy experience.
Example: full face helmet, visor closed, sustained speed of 180km/hr noise is fairly stable in a 38db standard.
I've bought more screens than I've had hot dinners! The Puig ERS provides a stable variable mounting at a cost! I do have the short GIVI in stock….will maybe try it.
As mentioned in other comments the tyre noise is funneled up the tunnel and upto 100kph is the dominant noise, even with PR6s. I notice that the 1300GS has a deflector plate on the lower triple yoke area…I wonder if this works?

I found switching to a GSA screen and using a little clip-on screen extension like that MRA has helped massively, even at autobahn speeds. I tried the Puig touring screen but it was much too tall.

I love my 1250 GSA’s wind protection. With a set of side bags, little to no wind blast.
Hi! Due to limited availability of this GIVI I was informed by my shop that The Kappa KD5124B windscreen (produced by GIVI SPA) features the exact same molding, identical material, and the same mounting hole pattern as the Givi D5124B. Slightly chaper and more available here in Poland. Thanks Carl!
I got that screen at a great price from ebay (got lucky for a change). Works for me, without any additional bolt-ons. Been on for 5yrs, so must be ok.
I have had horrible noise and turbulence over the years on several bikes. With my new 1250RS after trying several screens I found the Wunderlich touring screen with a VSA-TYP C (30/18 CM) – Vario-Touring-part "VSA-C" blade on top to work amazingly well. I also got a lower seat to bring my long torso downward. Result is no air at high setting and good flow for hot days on lower setting. No buffeting.
Best setup of any bike I have had. I see on the Wunderlich screen that there is a notch cutout on the middle of the bottom that I think achieves what you speak of with a reduction of pressure and increase of airflow through the gap on the bottom.

Great video showing all the options. Can I also posit that many other factors contribute to airflow, buffeting and noise that don't involve the screen.
Regarding windshield stability, I purchased a stability bracket on Amazon, and now even the tall touring screen is solid as a rock. I heartily recommend it.
Hi Carl, thanks for all the videos on the GS.. I’m just wondering, do you only ride with the screen in the lowest position so that you essentially have clear air over your Helmet? Is there much change to noise/buffeting with it in the higher position? Before I buy another screen I’m going to try your suggestion of changing the angle of the original with some spacers, will let you know. Cheers, Alan
Great job! I think you nailed it pretty well. I have tried the same route on my 1290 but could not tilt it and separate it so much from the bike (or didn't try as much as you), that angle appears to be more effective. The more upright, the more the airflow will stall, separate and create vortices. The other way is having a RT with a large aftermarket shield, were the vortices will curl further away from your helmet.
I've had my MRA Xcreen on three different bikes, currently on my R1250RT. Its worked a treat for me for years and I've never had any problems with it moving about

Why can’t BMw duplicate the 2016 K1600 airflow on the windshield, it’s perfect at my 6’2” height and longer torso
So negative pressure is actually a low level vacuum where the airflow over the frontal surface equalizes the pressure gradient in the true sense.
I find most of the noise on the gsa comes up the forks,and tires make big difference. Dunlop road smart 4’s seem to help 😎🏍💨💨💨💨💨👍🏻🇨🇦🍻

Hey Carl, I've been following you for many years and you are a jewel in the BMW ownership crown. You have been kind enough to email me back-and-forth some years back on this very topic. I have the same bike and color as you except a 23. On your advice I have been using the short screen with a lip on top and this was the best of all worlds since I have four shields sitting in a box in the garage. I am the same height as you and same dimensions, taller torso shorter legs, 32" inseam. As good as the current set up is(short OEM screen with lip) it could still be better and I am delighted that you came out with this video. I will try this with great anticipation. Thank you for all you do and your many many contributions to our sport. They are truly valued. One last thing, I know you have ridden the
R 1250R naked and there is nothing more quiet than clean air. I had the R125R for 3 1/2 years and really enjoyed the quiet. How would you compare your new set up to the naked roadster?
Similar issue with my 1250 RS. After trying 4 different screens, the best solution I’ve found has been quality ear plugs (with built-in speakers btw) and a some sort of cream to ensure a snug fit. It’s more deadened than I’d like but at least it has stopped the majority of the in-helmet noise.
1m91 6'25feet. Noise and buffeting is one of the reason i switched from 1250GS to R1300R, no more windscreen, more air but clean air !
Thanks Carl for another very detailed problem solver video. Had problem with the wind noise and buffeting coming between the hand guards and wind screen putting my hand on the mirror stem helped, then I taped some card board covering the mirror stem and brake and clutch master cylinders made a day and night difference.
I was fabricating some plastic pieces to replace the card boards but then I came across wind deflectors from good people at Ali express they mount on the mirror stem with a metal bracket covering the problem area no more wind noise or buffeting and cockpit is as quiet as can be.
Is this screen with the winglets an improvement by itself over the stock GS screen or do I need to space out the bracket? I had a Puig extention on my stock 23 GS windscreen and made it about 80% better it's in my line of sight so as soon as a few bugs hit it, I have to clean it. Edit: I'm 6 feet tall

Hi Carl, I use a lip on top of the standard screen, it works very well for me, but the added wind pressure means that I cannot adjust the screen height whilst riding, it just won’t budge. How is it with this Givi screen, I’m hoping it might allow screen height adjustment on the fly?
Wow, fantastic. I will be taking possession of a R1300GS within a month. Before tinkering with the screen I will of course test it, but I suspect I will not be happy with the factory screen because of noise and buffeting like every other bike I have owned. The Givi screen for the 1300 is quite a bit taller and skinnier than your 1250 Givi screen. Do you have any suggestions on what after-market screen I should look at to achieve similar results that you achieved?
Another great video. Very thorough in your analysis and solutions. Standard screen on the GSA works for me but this looks great for standard GS owners.
Regarding the unwanted movement, you could fit the Puig support brackets. My bike had a Puig screen fitted when I bought it but the additional brackets were not fitted. The bracket kit cost around £52 but really do work well.
