Reversing an S-Bend: Watch the Front Swing

S bend reversing through offset gaps needs front swing clearance: the rear can clear a wall while the front remains beside it. The rear can clear the first wall while the front is still beside it. This overhead animation shows an early turn that would clip the front, then the straight-back clearance check and S-shaped reverse route that fit this layout.

The blue car stops before the error. Only the transparent ghost takes the rejected turn, with its own steering display. After checking behind, the driver continues straight until the front has room to swing, then reverses towards the second opening.

Watch the two traces: green follows the rear axle; amber follows the front corner. Right steering takes the rear right while the front swings left. Steering left then straightens the car, even while the rear is still travelling right. The car pauses centred and parallel through gap B, then backs straight until the whole car clears.

The physical reference is front clearance relative to the first wall, with room for the upcoming swing. It is not a universal mirror marker or an instruction to turn as soon as the bumper passes an edge. Both sides, mirrors and the route behind need room. Stop and reassess if clearance or visibility is uncertain.

Original low-speed simulation, shown once in a right-side-traffic access-lane setting. The vehicle, 3.2 m openings, steering angles and stopping points belong to this example. Displayed degrees are front-wheel angles, not steering-wheel rotation. Check all around before reversing and continue checking while moving slowly.

General observation and front-swing guidance: Highway Code Rule 202. Its reversing observations support the lesson; this is our own geometry, not a prescribed UK layout or a jurisdiction-specific traffic-priority lesson.

Original animation, synthetic English narration and quiet original background music. English subtitles included.
