I remember a video game (machine, not a home-play system) in the middle 80s called "1942". You flew a P-38 to kill as many Japanese as possible. After playing that game a few times, I did some research about them. Before the F-6-F Hellcat was made, the Japanese hated the P-38 the most. Between the P-38s, Corsairs, and Hellcats (and their "sons", the Bearcat), the Japanese were left with no significant air power by the first day of 1945.
Wile, I’m generally a fan of Yamamoto’s brilliance and foresight. I sure hate the sneak attack – that was really shitty and they deserve what they got.
One thing to bear in mind by the time the American pilots got into the war, the Luftwaffe pilot had been flying for at least five years in combat

Also….and I can't believe they didn't mention this but it was a P-38 who shot down Admiral Yamamotos' plane toward the end of the war.
If the Brits didn't want the Lightning we should have refused to sell or help them on anything during the war. The Brits always tried to take advantage of the US.

The P-38 was astoundingly agile for a two-engine fighter. It not only had the range, but was armed with not only MG, but a 20mm cannon (with plenty of ammo) that could rip a Zeke to shreds.
Or top ace, Richard Bong (40 kills) flew a P-38. Our practice (a very good one) was to rotate any ace with 15 kills back to the States to train new pilots, and he somehow slipped through the cracks. (Japan's top aces simply fought until they died. Their #2 man, however, survived and wrote memoirs.)

The claims of the Fork Tail devil depend largely on the role of the captured Germans. The P-38 excelled at Ground Attack, it could carry a large amount of external ordinance and had more powerful guns than other fighters that may have been used in ground attack. I think that it is BS, it sure did not sound real, but I know that I would not want to be on the ground with a P-38 bearing down on our position with guns blazing and ordinance falling.
Unfortunately Bongs original “ Marg” with his girlfriend Painted on the side ( only had 4 of the 40 confirmed) another Pilot crashed it when Richard was on leave. The Plane was lost until ( not to long ago) the Famous Photo he took was later a different lightning they Painted and Put all his (kills on the side) Bong gave away Planes he shoot down and gave them to some of his wing men to raise morale! ( if he wanted to he would Could have Taken every single one and padded his Stats and had 60 kills! ( then there is the crocodile he shot) lol

My father was in the Belgium underground, he worked as an aircraft mechanic. He had been sneaking jew women & children thru the forest and keeping them safe from the Nazi’s until he was captured and he was being taken to a death camp. In middle of winter 🥶 2 soldiers were escorting him on foot following the train tracks at high altitude thru mountains. Soldiers wanted hot coffee & smoke, leaving dad outside in a snow bank with nowhere to run in wooden shoes and thin tee shirt and pants all made of paper fiber like your kitchen shamwow, which is where they were invented. A P-38 pilot saw him waving, recognizing he was captured, the pilot strafed the guard-shack and leveled it, dad was sole survivor and he didn’t waste time and as far away as possible. Thru the mountains he was able to pass into another small EU country and hid out at the farm of a veterinarian, the man hid him and gave him a job as assistant so he could pay his own way. He stayed about 4 months healing and word got around the escape prisoner was really being looked for and anyone helping him would suffer, so he vanished like smoke. To all our soldiers, thank you for your service, sacrifice and courage. Above all your love for America 🇺🇸. We owe you all a debt we can’t ever repay- if anyone is deserving REPARATIONS, it’s the men and women of our Armed Services of all branches! God bless you all and keep you safe
The P-38 could fire straight ahead instead of the more subjective zone of convergence common to wing fitted guns.. Thus dramatically increasing the rate of hitting targets.

P38 has been my favorite WW2 fighter since I was a kid in the sixties.
Calling it "the fork tailed devil" would have been kept off the record by those behind it, and isn't made up for public mojo. I fail to see why glorification needs to be put down so.
the P38 is a fascinating plane. Took a while to get the bugs out of it and get pilots trained. It was considered a difficult plany to fly well but flown well and you could out fly anything.

One of the real mysteries of the P-38's development is simply: Where did the counter-rotating Allison V12 come from? The LIghtning may be the only WW2 twin-engined aircraft to be fitted with counter-rotating engines. Was a special production line set up to build them? I've never heard this question about the plane asked or answered.

The first P38s used by the British were missing superchargers, correct? Wasn’t this done because we wanted to keep the superchargers we had for our planes at that point in time?

From my Dads perspective he lost a friend flying one, said they were difficult to fly, yet I had a steel model to play with as a child, seems counter productive, maybe it was an early production one his friend flew in. Dad was a Korean Vet, even though the plane was replaced by the jet, were they ever used in the next war with cameras that you spoke of?? I don’t know details I was probably 6 when DAD told me. When I was a youngster in the early 60s, I lived in Connecticut and on the weekends we would frequently see formations of 2, 3 or even four P38 Lightnings flying Air National Guard training missions in the Hartford area. My Dad, an Army Vet, stationed in Germany, in the early 50s, would tell us about the plane and its history during World War II.
My father was also a pilot in the Pacific and he said that the p-38 was the best killing machine he ever flew
The Germans were very much aware of the cavitation problem of the early P38 combined with gun jamming inexperienced Pilots applying the wrong combat Doctrine yeah they were easy then but then the cavitation problem was solved and that was the end of the game because what the Germans were doing is getting the P-38 Pilots to go into dive in the German Fighters didn't have the cavitation problem at the same speed so they were able to draw p-38s into an uncontrolled crash

First, the P-38E/F-4 were modified and flown with wing pylons, drop tanks, The P-38F introduced pylons and fuel feed and drop tanks in February 1942. The 1st, 14th, 82nd were sent to 8th AF in summer/fall along with 1,000's of 75 and 150-gal drop tanks. Eisenhower took half the B-17s, all the A-20s, all the C-47s and all the P-38s to form Spaatz/Doolittle's 12th AF for operation Torch.
Joint Chiefs Arnold, Marshall and King strenuously objected stripping 8th AF of its escort fighters and B-17 bomb groups, but FDR decided with Eisenhower. In other words, one of the so-called Bomber mafia (Arnold) was pissed that bomber escort P-38s were stripped from 8th AF, while another so-called Bomber mafia Spaatz took the P-38s to provide for high altitude escort.
As to Kelsey's career 'being at risk' for guiding Lockheed into developing XP-49/P-38 droppable tanks in August 1940, he had the full backing of General Oliver Echols CG Materiel Command (his boss) and the project was not withheld from Arnold's attention. The memo you discussed did Not prohibit development of bomb racks, fuel feed and droppable fuel tanks – only that AAC would not pay for the R&D. We have only Kelsey's word as written by Bodie that such issue existed with Arnold. By Kelsey's own words as stated in Dragon's Teeth, pg 67, Arnold asked the question regarding 'who authorized the drop tanks on P-38s' but there was no drama or sinister intent regarding the question. Arnold was an advocate of 'break to rule, ask forgiveness later' when his commanders thought and executed out of the box.
