John from shares the top 6 effortless leafy greens that THRIVE in extreme summer heat, even when temperatures hit 115°F and stay over 100°F for weeks at a time! If you’ve struggled with standard lettuce bolting or traditional spinach dying in hot weather, this episode will show you the absolute best heat-tolerant greens that actually love a scorching desert summer.
In this episode, you’ll discover the easiest, drought-resistant superfood greens perfect for desert gardening, tropical climates, or any garden facing brutal heatwaves. These greens don’t just survive—they explode with growth in 110°+ weather, providing you with endless harvests of fresh, nutrient-dense leaves.
🌿 What You’ll Learn in This Episode:
* Which greens laugh at extreme heat (perfect for Las Vegas, Phoenix, Texas, the tropics & beyond).
* Sweet Potato Leaves (Ipomoea batatas): How to grow an endless vertical wall of greens that lowers your AC bill while growing roots below.
* Wild Arugula (Diplotaxis integrifolia): The spicy, anti-cancer, liver-detox green that thrives in blazing heat.
* Baby Sun Rose (Aptenia cordifolia): The unkillable, edible succulent ground cover.
* Water Spinach (Ipomoea aquatica): The “heat-loving lettuce” that gives you rapid cut-and-come-again harvests.
* Chaya / Tree Spinach (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius): The most abundant tree you can grow. (Note: You MUST cook this properly before eating. Using a wet-heat cooking method, like steaming it in an Instant Pot, safely neutralizes the plant without destroying it with dry, high-heat baking!)
* Spicy Blue Basil (Ocimum basilicum x purpurascens): The bubblegum-minty variety that outperforms standard Italian basil in the sun.
🌱 Want to see MORE heat-tolerant greens? While this episode focuses on my top 6, I also successfully grow Malabar spinach, Longevity spinach, Bele / Salad Tree, Moringa, Egyptian spinach, Cranberry hibiscus, and Papalo! Be sure to check out the links below to my past summer garden tours to see those amazing plants in action.
By the end of this episode, you’ll know exactly which greens to plant for hot climates, how to use your microclimates, and which varieties deliver the most nutrition and resilience so you can secure your own food supply.

I've been a long time watcher and you have never had a bad video. Thank you for all the knowledge you give man!
Amazing garden! When are you going to visit TD this year? I cant wait to see his trees🌲
The only problem with plants growing up your walls is bug infestation. It provides easy access for bugs into your house.
What a cool garden.
Did you give up on the TD garden updates because of the Y tube police? I really liked your visits to his garden.
One of the first guys I watched on the tube for growing knowledge. So great to see you still growing brother!!!
