Over 4,200 years ago, Egyptian governor and scout Harkhuf returned from an eight-month expedition deep into Nubia with a caravan loaded with exotic goods—and one very special traveler.
When Egypt’s newly crowned child pharaoh, Pepy II, received the news, he didn’t care about the gold, ivory, or incense. Instead, the 6-year-old king sent back an urgent, anxious royal decree containing one primary instruction: bring the dancing performer to the palace immediately, inspect him 10 times a night, and whatever you do, don’t let him fall into the Nile.
Harkhuf was so proud of this royal letter that he had it carved word-for-word onto the facade of his tomb at Qubbet el-Hawa. In this video, we explore Harkhuf’s four dangerous expeditions beyond Egypt’s southern border, the shifting balance of power in ancient Nubia, and the surprisingly human story behind one of the Old Kingdom’s most unique surviving documents.
