I got used to laying fingers, then barre. Once I got comfortable with that, I forced myself to practice laying the barre then fingers. It has helped my changes a lot. I applied this to my other chords too – I noticed I was setting my first two fingers, then my third on the D chord and now I practice setting the third then the first two and I am noting improvement in song playing. 🤘🏼
Doing revision of this module as I return to this course after 1-2 years away from regular practice – I’d say I was more on the side of Barre first-lay down the e-shape fingers afterward-SQUEEZE until the strumming rang all of the notes out! Actually bought a grip strength tool in a pound shop to help when I started F chord in, like, mid 2021. Oh god, over 4 years?! It’s really time to move on to the next few modules!!
Great to have F in the pocket now, never thought I’d be able to play it properly. This course continues to amaze me. Cheers Justin.
Thank you ❤
I can't get the B and High E string to ring out in the F. Any tips??
I found that it hurt to do barre chords and it burnt me out of practicing for a while, like a few weeks. Turns out a major factor was that my action was too high 🙃 surprise, much easier when I found out and fixed it
That darn B string always sounds muted. I have to really roll the pointer finger over to it's side to make it clean. All the other strings sound good. Thanks
Thank you!! So helpful.
The full barre F is much easier for me than the mini F. Either finger 3 mutes the second string or I can't get the first string to ring in the barre.
I still can't play the F chord properly
I sort of stalled once we got the the F barre chord on Justin's course but after messing around strumming avoiding the inevitable… I tried it again and I can more or les switch from C to F barre. It's slow but accurate so now I'm doing 1 minute changes. I also bought Justin's music theory course and I feel my guitar journey is moving again.
Don't give up take a break at least
34.99 doller we can buy 8 t shirt with high quality in Bangladesh 😂
6:03 what if firstly I place the finger 2 first, and then place barre, finger 3, finger 4 all together? Is that fine too?
I'm glad I found this video. Trying to decide which fingers go down first. The bar first, or lower two fingers
I place the the bar and the middle finger first, and usually already play whichever note comes next. This gives me enough time to place my ring and pinky. Has a nice sound, too!
52 years old, started playing 3 years ago. Im currently working on G – F – D chord transition for Wanted Dead of Alive by Bon Jovi. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!
Justin. I love your lessons and instructions. You are a wonderful teacher. Thank you.
I now just drop tune my guitar and play F# – much easier! 😆
If I put the bar down first, I struggle to get my little and third fingers down together. Maybe it’s just practice but for now the bar down last is working better for me.
Do you strum all of the strings with the barre F chord?
it takes time for sure. For me, the Fmaj7 was the way to go for a long time. But ultimately, I moved to the barre chord version of F, because the mini F, as it's called, felt awkward and impossible, and I had already learned the B minor barre chord. The big break through, though, for me, was realizing I could switch from C to the F barre chord while leaving the ring finger on my fretting hand down on the A or 5th string for both chords. That "anchor" is as big a deal as leaving the ring finger down on the B string when switching from G to D, which most guitarists remember as a breakthrough moment.
I find that planting the barre and middle finger at same time first is quite easy to learn to do fast and then adding ring and pinky quite simple get up to speed ….land the barre and middle finger first as a quick anchor
Hi! Thanks for your videos!
I'm practicing the F for a while now and it's still very hard to keep the speed of the songs when the F comes. I'm looking for a way to get there somehow but it's reeally a good idead to practice it separately like G -> F or D ->F instead of only just using it in songs. it feels like i can play the whole thing and I always trip on the F.
For me it's easier to put the middle finger first, then the others, then the bar. But that also takes the longest to finally strum the chord. Unlike the G where you have a little more time to place the ring finger when you already start strumming and got the others right.
I am subscribed from David Taub Next Level Guitar course. However, I use other free utube resources to learn also and yours I use a lot. I always upvote your videos to show support. Thank you Justin.
Easier for me to place the fingers first before the barre
king!
I'm switching between the the F & a C, because the 3rd finger dose not move, so I kinda use it as an anchor. I always star each change stating w my index finger
I can play F fine but am not very quick to change to it from other chords. I think this is because I've been placing the barre last which is slowing me down, as my pointer finger is unable to put itself in the barre position independently whilst in the air. This is causing me to basically make the 4 finger F shape mid air and once my 3 fingers are placed on the frets i then move my pointer to the barre position. Hopefully switching to placing the barre first might help improve my speed and train my muscles to assume that outstretched barre position mid air.
For the F barre chord, I've been practicing the section of Hurt by Johnny Cash. It goes: G Am F C. It's good if you want to practice the weak finger G as well.
Great video as always! You are by far the most pedagogical guitar teacher on the tube. As said in other comments your enthusiastic and understanding approach makes it feel very connected. Hats of to you.
I’ve noticed that when I practice songs with F it gets “sloppy”. Sometimes I’m not pressing hard enough on the bare and sometimes I’m a bit of with one or two of the fingers. Do you recommend to back up and do more practise on just the chord or do you think it straightens out. I’m still doing sessions of just practising the chord only not as frequent. Keep on being you!!
Best regards.

I like the point about learning to be in 'observer' mode. That said, I haven't seen instructions/methods for how to get there. (I guess I'm lucky — picked it up more or less by accident along the way. The downside is that I don't have specifics to articulate.)
The cheat mini f is faster, only play 4 middle strings, same basic shape as C. Also I've played 20 yrs, and finally all fingers are hitting in the right place at the same time, on the dam F bar chord, I recommend neck, shoulder, arm and hand yoga.
I didn't really think about the order I place my fingers in for the F chord. Realised after watching this video it was kind of in reverse. Little finger first, ring, middle, bar. How odd. I'm going to try different ways and see which one works best 👍
I can play F no problem now and can even slide the barre down the neck with ease and its all good but as soon as i try change to another chord im screwed xD
For me it s fingers first for sure but I reallyy have to twist my index finger quite a lot to get the thinnest strings ringing out nicely, for which I also have to move my entire arm back idk still feels kinda weird.
My third finger …..is like ok m going
My solution was: First lerning the f minor chord.
If this fit, it just need a little bit of attention to the m-finger to play f major.
As a older player who started at 44 years old 10 years ago, i know the struggle is real.. it took me almost 2 years of practice to be able play the f-chord in a song without issue . All i can say is keep practicing you will will get there….
Fantastic! Right there with me. No dust, no cobwebs, no lumps and bumps or, impatience in your tuition. Silky smooth and so intimate.
Ive never been able to do a full bar correctly because my knuckles wont allow me to get a clean note every string.
So my solution was play only the middle 4 strings. But essentially the bar without either E string.
And then when you go to C or Am its pretty easy
The easiest way I've learned is to use your thumb for the root. Not only the F but up the neck to root other chords as well. Once I learned this, major chords rooted on the low E string became much easier and accurate.
B and F are becoming easier with a new idea (for me) I had for smoothing out chord changes… go through the major chords A to G. I still go through all of the good teachers I find on here because the more times I watch a video the more I get out of it (lots of things just whipped right by me at supersonic speed the first few times through).
I only started playing around this time last year for two reasons: 1) I wanted to play along with my own singing instead of singing with the radio (CD or whatever) and 2) learning new things at 61 is good for neuroplasticity (exercising the brain to maintain new cell growth) because if you don't use it you lose it.Thanks you've been a great help.
Justin – congrats on your Vodafone advert plug… Great stuff
This has helped me EXPONENTIALLY. I have been playing since Christmas and am slowly improving but that F chord! Hoo! I had NO idea I was supposed to bar across the top as I am self-teaching and learning theory from a book. This helps so much! I love this channel.
After like 1 month of of practice I've finally nailed f chord and can play without even looking at it. Thanks to Justin. Another trick is pushing the guitar with your ches. When practicing it nearly feels impossible but just keep practicing and soon it will be a piece of cake.
Practice Let it Be from the Beatles to make it less boring. And the turnaround forced you to speed up the chord changes just a little bit every now and then. Hits all the chords and even played slowly it’s a nice song.
For me, it’s the moving from a chord to a bar chord, a bar chord on its own I can just about achieve.
