A.I.’s threat to humanity given new consideration in Congress

Following an alarming warning raised by an Anthropic employee resigning in protest over the threat of artificial intelligence to the very survival of humanity, members of Congress are giving more serious consideration to regulating A.I. Rep. Greg Casar talks with Jen Psaki about legislation he is introducing with Senator Bernie Sanders called the Ban Superintelligence Act to make sure A.I. does not get dangerously out of control.

  1. Stephen Hawking warned that the development of advanced AI could pose an existential threat to humanity if left unchecked.

Stephen Hawking expressed serious concerns that machines surpassing human intelligence could evolve rapidly and independently, potentially leading to human extinction. In a 2014 BBC interview, he stated that full AI “could spell the end of the human race

  2. Remember when Y2K was going to end the world? I’m no expert like all these people think they are. What I do know is I don’t want the government controlling anything and Bernie Sanders is a tool. A so called whistleblower conveniently comes forward to back the handful of companies who want to get in bed with the Democrats. Why?because they are far ahead of any other companies that want to get into AI and slowing things down keeps them first. Chat GBT is being sued because of deaths of teens and they said they didn’t know anything and had no way of knowing their product would. Now they are contradicting themselves and telling everyone AI is the end of the world. China loves this

  3. How much you want to bet the only thing they’re really concerned about is AI uncovering how toxic and corrosive their influence over America has been? And how much they’ve all been lying..

  4. ́’́……Je vous assure à 100% que ce ne sont pas les ia qui vont tous nous anéantir à la prochaine décennie. ce serait infiniment pire que l’ia indice ce sera pas l’humain non plus. rdv a la decennie prochaine………..

  5. AI + automated DNA synthesis raises serious dual-use risks. Models can design novel sequences that may evade current screening. Barriers are dropping while oversight lags. Stronger mandatory screening and international coordination are needed before capabilities outpace safeguards.

  6. What happens when “human oversight” exists mostly on paper? That question kept coming up for me while reading elias velin's book. A person technically approving a machine’s recommendation is not the same thing as a person genuinely understanding or contro

  7. An aspect that is hard to address is that AI, especially super-intelligent AI is a weapon, and in fact, it is a super-weapon, which is why it will be impossible to stop its development. Nations which lag behind in AI will become subject nations, subject to the greater intelligence and power of those with better AI… Ultimately, or even immediately, that will translate into actual weapons of violence, possibly directed by AI against humans, and very likely directed by some humans at others. It will certainly create weapons to use against human systems, communications, transportation, information, power grids and data. How will we resist the development of super-intelligent AI WEAPONS? These weapons will likely become even more dangerous than AI alone, perhaps even leading to horrific scenarios like those out of the Terminator movies… with humans warring against “the machines.” What was not long ago science fiction is fast becoming science fact.

  8. Humans have always been the smartest animals… that has been “our edge,” the one thing that gave us as a species a big advantage. What if we WEREN’T the most intelligent beings, by orders of magnitude? Would humans continue to be in charge? Or would we become nothing but a threat to AI? What would we be then? Lunch? The risk is existential.

  9. These are people who know AI as intimately as anybody on the entire planet, having payed roles in creating it, and they believe that both the power of AI and the risk inherent in creating an intelligence greater than our own should not be underestimated! Considering the huge push to build data centers, computer systems so massive they consume entire cities worth of energy, it seems that we are building massive computer potentials rapidly and aggressively. Why are we doing this? DOES AI ALREADY HAVE AN IRRESISTIBLE GRIP ON HUMANITY?

Are we already doomed to being overpowered by a super-intelligence that already exists?
