Walking tour of *Furnas*, one of the most unusual towns in Europe. Located on *São Miguel Island*, the largest island in the Portuguese archipelago of the *Azores*, Furnas sits entirely inside a vast volcanic caldera, surrounded by lush green hills and a landscape shaped by powerful eruptions. Intense volcanic activity is visible throughout the area. Steam rises from fumaroles and boiling water emerges from the ground.
During this walk, we explore the streets of Furnas and see its traditional basalt architecture. Along the way, we see fumaroles, hot springs, and other signs of the active volcanic system beneath the town. The Azores are a group of nine volcanic islands in the North Atlantic Ocean, known for their stunning landscapes. Furnas is one of the best places to see the volcanic origins of the islands.

Been enjoying your Portugal videos! I am an US Ex-Pat and have been living on Sao Miguel for more than 4 years here in Povoacao which is about 15 minutes from Furnas. Would be great if you would do a video here. Its one of the oldest villages in the Azores founded in the 1500's and we have one of the few real beaches on this island so it can be a tourist trap also.

Living in a town like Furnas is not for the weak at heart. Its hearty residents know and choose to live amidst the precarious condition called life. Yet they are among the happiest and kindest people on our planet. They've somehow learned to live and embrace the moment, while the rest of us live the illusion that life can somehow offer us permanency. Forgetting we're all here at the mercy of our CREATOR.

Estive lá em Julho. Que lugar mágico, E os bolos levedos era simplesmente divina! Acabado de sair do forno — tive a sorte de estar no sítio certo, à hora certa.
