Agostino Abbatiello, 24, who faces multiple charges of possession with intent to deliver and conspiracy, has been detained since his arrest in August.
A judge granted Abbatiello $250,000 bail during a hearing Wednesday, according to ABC Pittsburgh affiliate WTAE. As conditions of his release, Abbatiello must surrender his passport, live with his parents, avoid contact with witnesses and refrain from using drugs or alcohol.
Ahead of the hearing, Abbatiello’s attorney argued that his client was being treated unfairly after another alleged ringleader, Thomas Robinson, was granted $150,000 bail. Robinson is accused of selling cocaine from his fraternity house.
In an emergency motion filed Tuesday, Abbatiello’s attorney pointed to allegations that Robinson resisted detention, had a loaded 9mm handgun in his vehicle, threatened law enforcement and sold cocaine to confidential informants on five occasions. Authorities also allegedly found a handgun in a safe near cocaine and other drugs.
A different judge overseeing the case considered Abbatiello’s bail request Wednesday in Centre County.
More than a dozen people have been charged in connection with the alleged cocaine-trafficking operation, which prosecutors say involved current and former Penn State students, a parent and two fraternities.
Investigators allege Abbatiello and Robinson served as the operation’s primary suppliers, regularly traveling to Philadelphia and New York to obtain large quantities of cocaine.
The drugs were then allegedly cut and packaged, primarily at the Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi fraternity houses, before being distributed largely to Penn State students, according to the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office.
