I feel like we really need to do a better job of talking about the diversity of sexuality and gender roles within the animal kingdom. It can be so validating for queer people to learn that this notion of heteronormative roles being the standard within the natural world is purely fabricated. Everything from matriarchal systems, homosexuality, asexuality, non monogamy, hermaphroditism, and far more are natural and heavily present across various species.
How did she know they were gay birds? How did she know they were the same gender or sex? I have yet to meet a single veterinarian, biologist, zoologist whatever who is willing to say the gender of a bird without some very complicated testing.
