Credit card issuers collected about $17 billion in late fees in 2024, per the CFPBs latest market report — the largest fee category.
A federal rule meant to cap many of those fees at $8 was vacated in April 2025, so that lower safe harbor never stuck. Typical late fees have stayed near $32, the Bureau has said.
If you carry a balance, Fed G.19 data put the average APR on accounts assessed interest near 22.2% in Q2 2026 — roughly 22%.
