The P-39 Airacobra’s engine wasn’t in the nose — it sat behind the pilot, driving the propeller through a ten-foot shaft under his seat, just to clear space for a 37mm cannon firing through the propeller hub.
It should have been brilliant. Instead, with no turbocharger, it lost power fast at altitude and could drop into an unrecoverable flat spin — and the US Army nearly gave up on it entirely.
The Soviets didn’t. Fighting low over the Eastern Front, they turned it into one of the most feared fighters of the war.
