Carney pitched a $50 billion Maple Fund in September 2024 while still chair of Brookfield and simultaneously advising Justin Trudeau. It never took. So he ran to become PM. My research has led me to conclude he ran in order to re-orient and shift the policies he advocated for but could not seal with Trudeau.
The plan called for $36 billion from Canada’s largest pension funds, $10 billion from the federal government and $4 billion from Brookfield itself. Carney became Prime Minister on April 28 2025, three months after resigning from Brookfield on January 16 2025. Within weeks his government announced $2 billion for small modular reactors, $925 million for AI data centers, and a $13 billion Build Canada Homes program – the exact sectors Brookfield already owns and operates in conspicuously at a high level through subsidiary corporations.
Ethics commissioner Konrad von Finckenstein testified in December 2025 that Carney’s future compensation is tied to Brookfield’s success and that the Conflict of Interest Act permits it. Even the clerk of the Privy Council, Michael Sabia, held Brookfield shares and sold them once the ethics commissioner told him he owned them.
