Ford has ended production of the first-generation F-150 Lightning, once the best-selling electric pickup in America, and says a new Lightning is on the way. The next-generation truck will use an extended-range electric (EREV) design, with electric motors driving the wheels and a gas engine acting only as a generator, for an estimated range of over 700 miles. The video explains why the original truck was dropped (battery cost, slower EV demand and towing range), what Ford officially announced, how an EREV works, and why Ford is shifting toward a mix of hybrids, EREVs and EVs by 2030. It also covers what is still unknown, since Ford has not confirmed a launch date or price, plus the real risks of the plan.

I have a 2023 Lightning Lariat Standard Range. I was able to get it before the tax credits disappeared and I love the this truck. I don't tow anything but I like having a truck to move things and carry pretty large loads. I have taken a few trips with a little range anxiety but now that fast charging has become more avalible I am not so worried. I think all electric works for me and the frunk space is great. I think that would be lost on a new hybrid truck and would get the new Lightning variant. I know for some this new variant would check more blocks but I personally don't those check or changed from the current version. I would have loved to gotten the exended range model but it wasn't in the cards at the time. I might consider a used Platinum trim Extended range model in the future. 😊
I would definitely buy it!
I hate AI Videos.
I have the 2022 lightning. Pure electric for me. I only tow a few times a year for shot distances. I love the quiet torquey ride and comfort of the Lariat Lightning. I almost got the cyber truck but ended up passing due to its strung out launch date which was too long of a wait for me. This is the best truck money can buy, just my humble opinion.
I’ll buy a EREV. Especially with 700 miles range.
My Wife Leased A Tesla 3 dual motor and we loved it . Now I wanted A new F150 to replace my Rouse supercharged 4×4 150 . I will have to weight for fords new Lighting f150 I hope its like the ford Tremor 4×4 with 700 mile range it's got me sold !
I will buy an all electric truck. My current Lightning has a summer time range of 340, I charge at home with my solar panels, now if I can figure out how to use public charging….
I have 2022 Lightning. ❤. I would consider a EREV for sure.
Did Ford copy this EREV tech from the Chinese EREV cars?
I will definitely buy it
It should have always been a mix…. Derrrr…..
Scout better hurry up!!
I think the Ford F150 lightning is dead. The new Ford electric truck and is now called the Fathom.
I have the 2025 Flash. I have owned many F150's in my life and the 2025 Flash is the best. When I heard the announcement from Ford that they were going to discontinue the Lightning I immediately decided to purchase mine. I had intended to wait to purchase in 2027. I am thankful that I purchased when I did. I have had no issues and love my Lightning. Hope it last forever, also hope Ford goes back to a fully electric truck in the future. I am not interested in the EREV.
This is an electric hybrid truck! You still need gas to extend the range! This requires oil change, coolant, spark plugs etc. 👎
2024 lightning flash lease,if nothing similar to that I will buy the lease
There is company about to market a conversion kit for EREV charrge while you drive for the Lightning……port is in the bed, just throw in a small generator and badda bing!!
I love my 2023 XLT standard range with 127k miles. I would love to replace it in a couple of years with other fully electric F150. Has Ford considered keeping the fully electric extended range.
As a standard range fully electric F150 we, every day, people that don't need long range towing. I believe there are a lot of us out here. They uses the truck for light jobs and day to. day commuting.
F one hundred fifty… Well hello AI… You still have a problem with understanding our language
More AI crap!!!!
I refuse to watch it!!!!
I LOVE MY STANDARD RANGE 2023 XLT LIGHTNING, WILL NEVER GO BACK TO AN OIL BURNER
Ford had a major hit on their hands with the BEV lightning and all they had to do was stay the course and implement new tech on a yearly basis. EREV is not new… They are complex, inefficient, high maintenance and with the enormous amount of extra parts it has, the odds of something going wrong, increases. This is well documented of past EREVS.
The problem with BEV "trucks" is that legacy auto is trying to market them as if they are an ICE truck replacement. That is the equivalent of saying a hammer can be used as a screwdriver. The Lightning's strength is its enormous cost savings in fuel, and increased utility, such as being able to tow like a diesel, a frunk for storing and charging tools, a power plant that can power a job site for days, and its an F150. Its kryptonite is long distance trips. Not a big deal if you need to stop a couple times a year for a half hour, but if you do this a couple of times a week, a BEV truck is not for you.
There is an enormous market for both to survive just like there a multitude of cars. For contractors such as ourselves that always stay around town, the lightning has been a game changer. We save $4k per year in fuel/maintenance per truck and they have become our primary work horses. We will only get BEV trucks from now on out.
EREV is designed to fool people into thinking they solved an imaginary problem without solving it. We have these things called ICE trucks that already do long distances well, without all the complications an EREV provides. The idea is, but you can use it as an EV most of the time. If you are using it as an EV MOST of the time, then you should be getting a BEV. If you are using it as an EV SOME of the time, know that you are needlessly hauling around a heavy generator, fuel tank, exhaust system, cooling, etc…making the EV portion inefficient. The same thing happens when you drive in gas mode. You are now hauling around a useless heavy battery. Add in all the maintenance you need to do with ICE plus making sure your gas stays fresh, what's the point. Just get a proven reliable ICE truck which will have a lower initial cost. RAM has been touting their EREV for half a decade now, but yet won't allow any reviewer to take out. Why? These EREV's are going to be dead in the water soon after their release. Ford made a huge mistake.
