The Maharashtra Garba debate is intensifying ahead of Navratri, with Amruta Fadnavis taking a position in favour of inclusive celebrations while the VHP pushes for restrictions on Muslim participation.
Amruta Fadnavis has said she sees nothing wrong with a Muslim person attending Garba and enjoying the festival peacefully. She has argued that festivals should be inclusive and that participation should not be restricted purely on the basis of religion.
The comments come after the Vishwa Hindu Parishad called for Muslims to be kept out of Garba and Dandiya events in Maharashtra. The organisation has also suggested checking Aadhaar cards and using tilak as part of its proposed verification measures for attendees.
BJP leader and Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane has backed the VHP’s position, while other political voices have criticised the proposed restrictions. The controversy has therefore expanded beyond Garba itself into a broader debate over religious identity, cultural tradition, security, inclusivity and communal harmony.

I grew up in a government township, we used to celebrate all the festivals … It made us understand each other , and there were people from all over India ,so there was no north south east west – it was the most beautiful life . Then moved to the metropolitan Mumbai – again very inclusive. Now I am in a very small town in North India, I had surgery and people refused to drink tea because my house help was from a lower caste ( she needed work to educate her kids ) . I have a feeling people are going away from development to these issues
