His drummer pulled a knife on him, he turned down Marvin Gaye, and he had to rewrite the rules of the electric bass to keep up with Eric Clapton.
From his expulsion from classical music school for playing jazz, to inventing “lead bass” on a Gibson EB-3 through cranked Marshall stacks, writing rock’s greatest riff after seeing Jimi Hendrix, cutting experimental tracks with Frank Zappa, and surviving a near-fatal liver transplant to reunite Cream at the Royal Albert Hall, this is the story of rock’s most brilliant composer.

Jack Bruce was a genius and remains a legend. 🙌🏻🌹
Ronnie Van Zant told a story of scraping together enough money to see Cream when he and Gary were teenagers. Is it any wonder that Leon Wilkeson frequently played "Lead Bass" on his Gibson Thunderbird; Doubling up Allen Collins' Firebird…
Motown..Stay were already happening let along American Jazz .. Bass is Bass
From WHERE now? Hahahaha
My favourite part of this is where it claims Jack Bruce was the voice of Creedence Clearwater Revival.
Big BS on the statement about the electric bass at that time or anytime. Yes, in the '50s there was a brief stigma but once upright players started playing and talking about it, it was on fire! Bruce was super essential and that can never be understated.
He played on Apostrophe gd it!!!!!
The day he died we went to a St Louis Blues hockey game and they played Cream songs at almost every break. It was awesome.
❤❤❤ "we are going wrong" ultimate version on grand piano
Great video, but I wish you had also mentioned "West, Bruce and Laing," the band he formed with former members of "Mountain" in the early 70's.
songwriter like no other.
What an amazing incredible story.
"Prior to Cream the electric bass was largely treated as a background metronome…"
Scriptwriter dude obviously never listened to The Who. Entwhistle went off like a firecracker long before Cream.
He played a Fender Bass VI when Cream first formed and didn't start playing the Gibson EB til Wheels Of Fire, I believe.
Nah, he copied those rules from composers like Bach and Mozart. He was the first behs player who understood counterpoint.
Treating Jazz like its hard drugs…..wild. Walking out was the only option.
John Entwhistle was pretty darn good too at this time
Mr. Bruce sang lead w/ The Golden Palominos in the mid-80’s on two songs (Silver Bullet, Something Else Is Working Harder.) What a terrific group of artists Anton Fier assembled for his collectives.
Soulful singer; like someone singing from the bottom of a well, trying to reach an audience up top.
I was lucky enough to see one of the Cream reunion shows @ MSG in 2005. RIP Jack & Ginger!
One of the best period. No slap here
Bruce and Ginger RIP🙏🏽⚘️
Jack is one of the reasons I picked up the bass in 1972, still haven't put it down. Got to see him here in Colorado back in 1997 with Ringo Starr's All Starr band, he did all the cream hits with no less than Peter Frampton on guitar. And guess who showed up to play drums on those hits, yes Ginger Baker. In the 90s Ginger Baker lived near Denver, it was an awesome night.
If it weren't for Clapton, and/ or Baker, chances are, we'd never ever even heard of him.
They're the ones who brought Brave Ulysses, to life.
Una de las diez voces del rock más chingonas de los sesenta.😮🎉❤
Completely missing his fretless play when describing what he played. That was what first attracted me to Jack.
He re-wrote the electric bass to "keep up" with Eric Clapton? Really? No, not really. Baker and Bruce were in their own world with Cream.
For Lanarkshire say :LANuckshuh' (approx.)
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Bruce is one of the most important rock musicians ever; a great songwriter and bass virtuoso.
Good story! I've always been a fan of Cream since I was 6 yo, and I thank Jack Bruce for inspiring Geddy Lee.
He was awesome such an accomplished musician I wish I could of played bass only half as well as him rip
My favorite bass player.
Don’t forget his marvelous voice. He himself said the first strength he had was his voice.
To me, he was the cake in The Cream band. Eric Clapton was the frosting.
He should be in the conversation more of being one of the best bass players ever. CREAM was the mold for hard rock groups during that time & beyond.
The bassist from Wishbone Ash was also great
Dear Jack was such a heavyweight in ANYTHING he put his talents on. Amazing multi instrumentalist, singer and composer. He is sorely missed. RIP.
The world's finest Bassist and singer! ❤ That's a fact 💯 👌 👏 🙌
And then Ginger Baker started to bully him. Beware.
