Helicopter Control

A video showing the flapping, feathering and lead-lag motions of a helicopter rotor system.

The full video explains how these are used to control the helicopter.

Helicopter control relies on motion, or degrees of freedom, of the rotor blades. The flapping degree of freedom is essential for controlling a helicopter.

Other topics covered, in the full video, are flapping hinge offset, advancing and retreating blades, the region of reversed flow, forward flight dissymmetry of lift, retreating blade stall and rotor blowback.
