At forty degrees below zero, two mountain men lay down to sleep under nothing but a roof of fir boughs. No tent. No sleeping bag. No cabin. Just a wool blanket, a buffalo robe, a fire, and whatever they had eaten before dark. By morning, both of them were still alive. That was no accident. Every piece of that camp was a decision, and a man who got even one wrong could lose his toes before sunrise, or never see them again.
