In Puritan England of the English Civil War, Elvira loves Arturo, a Royalist, despite their families and political loyalties being bitterly opposed. On their wedding day, a mistaken identity and Arturo’s attempt to help a mysterious woman drives Elvira into despair. Arturo is forced to flee and is pursued by the Puritans. Can Elvira and Arturo overcome the political turmoil, betrayal, and heartbreak that have torn them apart?
If the story of I Puritani is relatively simple – a love triangle across political divides – Bellini’s music is sublimely refined. Every human action, every conflict, every evil, is taken and transformed into long, celestial melodies, which suspend time and have had a hypnotic effect on audiences since 1835. Bellini’s last opera – before his untimely death at just thirty-three years old – is perhaps the most elegant in its instrumentation and the most varied in its characters: ‘the gay, the sad, the robust of the pieces, everything was marked by applause’, wrote Bellini to his friend Francesco Florimo, the day after the premiere at the Théâtre-Italien in Paris. The new production from Teatro Regio Torino is conducted by Francesco Lanzillotta with an outstanding cast including John Osborn, Gilda Fiume and Simone Del Savio. Pierre-Emmanuel Rousseau directs a staging inspired by classicism and neo-romanticism.

I don't understand the reason for this tragic ending wanted by the director Pierre-Emmanuel Rousseau for this staging, which does not respect the libretto and above all what the Sicilian composer Bellini wanted in this musical masterpiece. In short, another example of "Regietheater", in which the director is disrespectful of the philology of a musical opera composed in 1835. Bad. Much better the musical conduction and the cast, particularly the phenomenal tenor Osborn, even if certainly the female protagonist, although a good singer, does not seem to have "le physic du role" (the stage presence) for this very difficult part.
AMAZING that Osborn can still sing this well after all these years. Man is definitely doing something right.
Would've loved to see the queen as Elvira …
weak principals in my experience….
I do not like the ending.
gracias a vos
Bravo and many thanks! I Puritani is my love opera 😉
Brilliant production in all aspects!!!
I wish I was there supporting because half of the teatro was empty.
Saw this at the met in nyc. Definitely one of my faves and I wasn't sure it would be.
Enrichetta is better than Elvira, oh God. And also brilliant costumes, horrible staging.
One of the best @operavision performances I’ve seen! Thank you ❤
Maravillosa! Muchas gracias por compartir esta excelente producción!🦊
Elvira troppo grassa.
This is actually my first opera , only thing that could of made it better is seeing it in person. Thanks to YouTube for bringing the Opera to us. 🎉A hundred years ago this wasn't possible 💞🎶⭐💖💗

This is underrated.
A pretty enough production but anachronistic in every way. The Puritans did not exist in Victorian England…sigh directors.
Bravo, men's chorus!
Per che ammazano Osborn? Non canta tanto male! La scena e ideale per "Jane Eyre".
Grandi cantanti per una grande opera. Tutti bravissimi !!
Is he dead?!?
