The biggest deathbed regret is not having the courage to live on your own terms. I don’t want that to be me. I’m old enough to see the pattern, and still young enough to take my life back.

I'm 41 with a family and two beautiful young kids. The best decision I ever made was not to escape the rat race, but to target lower financial risks, live within and often below our means, and most importantly, be content with what we have in life.
7 years ago we knew we needed a bigger house, but instead of "spending" every dollar the bank said we could borrow, we instead moved out of our big city and to a regional town 1hr 30mins away. Not only is our lifestyle incredible with walkability, cafes, pubs, things to do, great friends, and little traffic or car use, but we also bought our house for literally half of what we were able to spend.
This has allowed us to aggressively start paying off the house, and we're already more than halfway along in paying it off. This should snowball even more now that we will have less interest payments coming off the effective debt.
We know people who are always travelling on expensive trips and going into more debt to extend their house and have better optics for the world, but the reality is once you escape that mindset life starts to get a whole lot easier.
Life is a scam that only benefits narcissists – those with blind ambition and crave success, normies – those the crave being bossed about by narcissists, and idealist – those spiritual/artistic twats the believe the interplay between narcissists and normies is something divine and there's a profound meaning in it all. If you are none of the above then welcome, you have found yourself in hell. 🤷♂️

This is the first step, the second step is realizing that life has no teleological purpose and any story we tell ourselves (past sovereignty for self-protection) is just another story. On our death beds we're inches away from not existing so we'll get a lot of fanciful ideas like 'I wish I hadn't worked so hard' where if they'd applied that to their lives they would have had their status pulled and might have turned into alcoholics or drug addicts over the consequences. The longer I live the less I want to listen to much of anything people have to say about how to live life because we're just Darwinianly evolved animals that have to contend with the additional agony of a prefrontal cortex feeding that info with no answer on what to do.

I'm also 36 and never believed in the trap we were sold. Not since I was like 13/14. I've lived my life on my own terms but if I'm honest that comes with a different set of problems. It can feel tiring, isolating and has always made me feel like an outsider. Plus I've been hearing for decades that I've wasted time and haven't lived up to my potential etc etc.
It's been hard to stick to my own guns. I've noticed the shift since the pandemic- unfortunately it comes from desperation and fear and resentment. I hope one day we can all wake up and come together and enjoy our lives within chosen communities.

I am 25, and I already understand all of this. We are all being lied to. Most young people now finish university and they can't find jobs, homes are becoming unaffordable, and even if graduates do find jobs, they end up working in dead end jobs. It's all a lie. I remember in school teachers used to brainwash students into believing that if you have a degree you'll just walk into a job and get paid higher salary. None of it matters. A degree no longer guarantees a job. AI can do most graduate jobs. A life where you have a great job, an expensive car, a big house is now out of reach for most young people and we are probably heading towards an apocalypse. Of course, there are people who achieve these things, but they are usually in the top 5% or top 10%.

Lets not forget that we all may need and want the best possible health care when we get old. Someone has to pay for that. Hence taxes and insurance. This day and age people are dropping left and right between 50 and 60. They say if you make it to 60 you have a chance to make it to 70. Postponing having kids can backfire. Nobody guarantees we'll be there to raise it too.
Totally feel you! I knew that right away, so the first thing I did after apprenticeship was having a nonrepaymemt year to fully concentrate on music production. Since then i worked 50%, later 25%. I bought a little house and property in the woods for 15k only, renovated it, and now for over 5 years i'm not paying rent to anyone.

Vi forlod et hus i Danmark, vi valgte simpelthen at holde banken oppe på den aftale af hvis ikke vi ville betale mere, jamen så blev huset deres. Vi har aldrig været rigere, fra Italien hvor vi har været i 1 år skal vi videre tilbage nordpå til jul. Jeg glæder mig, og jeg skal aldrig sætte mine fødder i Danmark igen. Svigtet i min retstære er ikke engang beskrivende nok, jeg føler mig fuldstændig ligegyldig i det spil der hedder Danmark. Jeg kan aldrig tjene nok penge til at betale for tabere på overførselsindkomst, og jeg kan aldrig få succes for at være bedre end andre. Fuck dem allesammen ❤
