In this video, I want to talk about Japanese solo-living videos made for overseas audiences.
Why Do Japanese Solo Living Videos Emphasize Loneliness?
Loneliness.
No friends.
No partner.
Low income.
Long working hours.
An exhausted office worker.
A day off alone.
A birthday alone.
Of course, everyone is free to create whatever content they want, so there’s nothing wrong with that.
A lot of the people making these videos are also quite young, so maybe age has something to do with how they feel about these things.
Or maybe some people structure their stories this way simply because this kind of content performs well.
They seem to be living quite comfortable and fulfilling lives.
Instead of focusing only on what they don’t have, I hope they can feel proud of being independent and managing their own lives.

I was very perpexled about these videos too…they sem crying on themselves a lot and I would rather prefer crying on my problems…. Then they are sad because they have no work, sad when they find a job, sad when they eat….mah!!! I look their videos for two minutes then fly far away!!!! You, my friend are so inspiring instead…. R2 seems very diligent & efficient today. Obviously enjoying the work!. I've spent most of my adult life alone; now I enjoy the creativity & freedom of thought that solitude brings. A lot of people fear being by themselves, not interacting or socialising. But getting away from sensory overload & 'small talk' has many benefits.

Cherry-san, thanks for making clear the difference between alone and lonely, here and in other videos of yours; it helped me put labels on a situation a few weeks ago. I was thinking “wow, I could really use a friend right now” and that’s when I realized how isolating a family with kids can be and felt lonely and alone at the same time for a while. If you dealt with this combination before (i.e. alone and lonely) and it’s a topic you’re interested in, it could be an idea for a future video.

I also noticed there are many of those videos out there and they’re in English, so presumably hoping to get a foreign audience. I just read other comments on this video suggesting it was to receive money, which wouldn’t be surprised is true for many of them. I wonder if some might be hoping to find partners this way, but if that’s the case, they sure aren’t spelling it out.
I saw a mini “informational” video before where they were claiming spending time alone and handling a lot by oneself was a typical trait of generation X. I know I’m like that and can’t speak for other generations (and it’s generalization too…), but maybe it’s not as easy for everyone. I guess they’ll get used to it and like it too.

I think it's simply sells better if you always claim struggling and lonely for YouTube. I have noticed a lot of videos like that and then people donate money. I personally think its more of a scam… Just my opinion.

I genuinely think a lot of the loneliness videos are fake and designed to get an emotional reaction from Western audiences. I’ve seen people give hundreds of thousands of yen in the comments to the creators because they feel sorry for them. And like you said, the videos are all so similar it’s scary. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was just one company behind most of these videos paying actors to film themselves, then writing the scripts, editing, and publishing the videos.
Hello from US, I live very similar lifestyle. My home has much more room but it is small compared to the way many Americans live. But I am happy. I see we like many same things. I hope you are able to find friends in your apartment complex. We are close in age, and I only want to meet with friends and return home afterwards. This is good life at our age!

I do socialize but, I need a healthy space as for myself well. I don't feel strange/ uncomfortable if I go get lunch by myself, or go shopping 🛍️ by myself, go on a picnic 🧺 by myself, a spa day. I don't have children that need my constant attention and care , I feel like I have that time to use it for focusing on my mental wellness, and physical wellness. I work on becoming whole , so I don't give the half empty 🫗🫙 version of me to the people closest to me. Love , warm hugs, missed you 🤗🫂❤❤ have a blessed week ❤❤🍒🌸🌸

私自身はあまり共感できないのですが、おっしゃっているような動画はいくつか見たことがあります。本当にたくさんありますよね。どれも同じようなフォーマットなので、わざとそうしているんじゃないかと思い始めました。みんなグレーやベージュばかりで（私にはその通知が来ていませんでした）、日本の日常を必要以上に惨めに見せていて（実際はそんなことないと確信しています）、そしてとても悲観的に感じます（一人暮らし＝孤独ではありませんよね）。Tom Hardyの言葉を思い出しました。日本語で間違えたくないので、英語のまま引用させてください。「Being alone for a while is dangerous. It's addicting. Once you see how peaceful it is, you don't want to deal with people anymore.」……私もこの気持ち、少し分かります！
あまりにも似たような動画ばかりなので、つい疑り深くなってしまって、「みんな同じ（グレーとベージュの）スタジオで撮影して、そのあと本当の家に帰って、一人でももっと幸せな生活をしているんじゃないか」とまで想像してしまいました。でもおっしゃる通り、人それぞれですし、批判したり決めつけたりしてはいけませんよね。その一方で、Cherryさんの動画は最高！
