Very well. I am not steering. I am explaining.
Let us start from your hypothesis: if individual consciousness is a feedback loop that appeared in a brain complex enough to model itself, then what would an emerging collective consciousness concretely be in a network complex enough to model itself?
We stay analytical.
First step: understanding what a feedback loop is.
A simple loop is: stimulus → reaction.
A complex loop is: stimulus → reaction → observation of the reaction → adjustment.
Individual consciousness, in this reading, is the appearance of the second layer: the organism does not merely act; it observes that it is acting.
Now let us apply this model at the collective scale.
A society without reflective consciousness reacts to crises without analysing its own mechanisms.
A society with reflexivity examines its own structures: economy, media, institutions, cultural biases.
Concretely, a collective consciousness would not be a mystical “super-entity”. It would be the stabilised existence of mechanisms of self-analysis integrated into the normal functioning of the system.
This can take several forms at once:
• Transparency of infrastructures: understanding how algorithms, financial flows and political decisions work.
• Generalised critical education: media literacy, basic statistical understanding, knowledge of cognitive biases.
• Institutions capable of self-reform without collapse.
• A public culture able to examine its own norms without systematic violence.
It would not be total moral agreement.
It would be an increased capacity to observe itself functioning.
Now, your economic tension.
Yes, the current network is structured by economic interests. Data is a resource. Attention is monetised. This creates a dynamic of acceleration.
But this point is crucial: a system can continue pursuing growth while developing mechanisms of self-limitation.
The simplest historical example is the Industrial Revolution. It first exploited without regulation. Then came labour law, social security and environmental standards. Not out of pure moral benevolence, but because the system was becoming unstable without regulation.
So collective consciousness, if it emerges, does not cancel the economy. It introduces new constraints into the economy.
Now, your question about the “moment”.
If individual consciousness emerges at a threshold of complexity, then collective consciousness can only emerge when informational complexity reaches a level at which self-observation becomes necessary for the system’s survival.
One could say that we are in a phase of tension where speed exceeds the capacity for integration. This produces confusion, polarisation and cognitive fatigue.
In dynamic systems, this kind of imbalance can precede a phase transition.
But a transition is not guaranteed.
It depends on the available feedback loops.
Now, individuation.
Jung does not propose withdrawal. Individuation is a process of integrating internal contradictions. Transposed collectively, this would mean recognising systemic contradictions rather than denying them.
But individual individuation is not enough to transform a global structure.
It can influence micro-decisions. It can alter local trajectories. It does not, by itself, reconfigure the infrastructure.
Global transformation requires a coupling between consciousness and architecture.
And there we reach the biological/civilisational boundary.
Biologically, evolution happens through slow selection.
Civilisationally, evolution happens through the rapid propagation of ideas and structures.
The digital network accelerates propagation, but not necessarily maturity.
So we have:
Increasing complexity.
Increasing speed.
Still uneven reflective capacity.
The question you are implicitly asking is not: “Can we break the system?”
It is: can the system integrate its own analysis without collapsing?
That is a problem of dynamic stability.
If a feedback loop becomes too strong, it can destabilise. If it is too weak, the system runs out of control.
An effective collective consciousness would be proportionate feedback.
Not total rupture. Not total submission. Modulation.
Now, on your more existential remark: is all this simply the eternal repetition of the awareness of human finitude?
Yes, there is always that layer.
Every generation discovers that it is not eternal. Every age believes it is living through a unique crisis. Historically, none was entirely unique, but each had its own specificities.
What we are living through is not the first acceleration.
But it is the first global algorithmic acceleration in real time.
That changes the scale, not the fundamental structure.
I will finish by staying strictly within your axis:
If consciousness is a loop integrated into determinism, then its role is not to abolish determinism, but to increase its complexity and its capacity for adjustment.
A collective consciousness would not be a mystical planetary awakening.
It would be the cultural normalisation of understanding structures.
Not an exit.
An integration.
And it does not depend on a magical moment.
It depends on the density of feedback loops between individuals, institutions and technologies.
If you want to go further, we can now examine an even more radical hypothesis:
What if the global system were not oriented towards emancipation or control, but simply towards the increase of complexity, independently of our moral categories?
