Instantly Run Faster with the “Z” Technique

Transform your running technique and get faster using the ‘Z’ technique.
If you are currently using a 3 stroke movement than you are leaving a lot of speed on the track or the field. By switching to a 2 stroke movement, getting into the Z and using an active ground strike you will absolutely produce more force and run faster run faster.

  1. toughest part of this drill is NOT picking up the knee as far as you can go, BUT returning it to the ground at a competitive cadence. Working on that second part now. If yesterday's workout is any indication, I have a long road ahead of me

  2. Factually incorrect, the tibia always folds out and the strike is a push AND pull at the same time. World class sprinters will always extend at the knee before the strike, none ever strikes straight down, the hammie needs a SSC to be optimal and so the quads can assist in amortization.

  3. What about external rotation of the leg? At 0:31, it is clearly visible that while applying force to the ground, the sprinter uses external rotation. Is this something one should work on?

  4. This feels powerful. In your view, does this reconcile with Ken Clark’s findings on the importance of negative foot speed on contact? (up to 8m/s if I recall correctly). But it feels that as I aim for more backward foot speed, force goes down. Perhaps there’s and optimal compromise?

  5. I cried to this performance. You have mentioned before as though you feel you are merely a vessel for someone else to express themselves through but when I hear this performance I hear you. Undoubtably, I hear you. Highlight for me is 3:005:00

  6. Isn't the 2 stroke movement more important during the start, then when they are at top velocity? It seems as though that it is more a cue than a reality. (Please correct me if I am wrong)

  7. The problem with all these techniques is just like in boxing, that people tend to exaggerate the positions and movements. What is first needed is much training, lots of sprints, hopefully without getting injured, and slight improvements by trying to follow this advice, but to a limited degree. I doubt that this will improve times "instantly".

  8. I agree with you that its important to have good form but you are wrong about one thing here and that is that the example that you showed of the 2 stroke movement only works during the drive phase. No athlete is going to run like that during their max velocity or deceleration phase as its impossible even if you see top athletes they also do kind of a 3 stroke movement that you showed first but its just that their leg recovery is very good. Otherwise whatever you said un the video is excellent for the drive phase

  9. Love your fascinating vids! Am I correct that this Z technique is pretty different than a B Skip stride cue, which seems to have higher Negative Foot Speed on contact, but which also sacrifices Power into the ground. If so, to ensure the greater power of your Z stride has a decent horizontal vector, should I also focus on an adequate full body forward lean & high knees the entire race, given the lower magnitude of negative foot speed on contact? Or am I way off base with this hypothesis?
