Let’s Build An Up-Armored BMP-1 (Trumpeter 1/35)

My friends, the BMP-1 is one of those famous modern vehicles that saw action all around the world. From a modeller’s perspective, it’s a very interesting subject because of the wide variety of paint schemes, different types and intensities of weathering, but also, in recent history, pretty wild field modifications.
The Trumpeter kit is a simple one, and it’s fairly cheap. When it was a new release, I built one quickly out of the box. But this vehicle is so much fun that I had to build it again, 13 years later.

Disclaimer: I have a good relationship with a handful of modelling brands and stores, namely VMS, Michigan Toy Soldier Company, RT-Diorama and AK-Interactive. As such, I’m happy to use their products/services, and show them in my work. In return, they support my efforts in this hobby, although my hands are not bound nor am I obligated to push one brand or the other. This was one of the founding ideas of the channel and I will always stand by this.

  1. Still surprised some vendor hasn't reached out about Night Shift branded welding tools and making the classic soda can tool an official piece of kit. Love the build!

  2. Please make a video about upgrading plastic model figures, for example by replacing the original head or adding photo-etched military insignia and details to improve realism and accuracy.

  3. I'm at college and your video makes me wish I brought a kit with me! It's so much fun to weld, I saw your tool and made one out of a teeny tiny brass pipe that I cut at an angle. works like a charm

  4. I picked up a bmp3 with extra armor from trumpeter, i havnt touched yet, but maybe when i do eventually get to it, ill probably be watching this again or another model build of bmp's to keep me entertained while im building it.

  5. I need new sharp tweezers. Which ones do you use ? My favorite pair has been on the floor one time too may and are not very straight anymore. Also any advice on how to get the mojo back ? I’m in a bit of a rut and no subject is really catching my interest as of late but I don’t want to give up on the hobby

  6. This was a really fun build to watch. I look forwards to the painting video.
BTW, I probably would recommend 3d printing yourself a jig to make long strips of the concrete support mesh. I think having very consistent wire spacing, from using the jig, would make them more accurate as well as take less time to produce. Cheers!

  7. Did the wire around the turret even do anything in reality?
I feel like everything comming from the top would have destroyed the vehicle anyway. While firing from the side at it people probably would aim dead center.
