Nest thermostat missing a C wire? No problem — we found the fix.
Today Mikey Pipes is on an actual HVAC service call in Long Island, NY diagnosing a Nest thermostat wiring problem on a home heated by a Burnham Alpine high-efficiency gas boiler with multiple hydronic heating zones.
The Nest was originally connected with only R and W, but smart thermostats often perform best when they have a dedicated C/common wire providing continuous 24-volt power.
Fortunately, the original thermostat cable had additional unused conductors. After tracing the wiring from the thermostat back into the boiler room, we found an available conductor that could be repurposed as the common wire.
But we don’t just start connecting wires.
We verify continuity, identify the thermostat wiring, clean up some questionable existing wiring, properly route the cable and then connect the additional conductor to the 24V common at the zone relay. The blue conductor becomes our new C wire while keeping the thermostat wiring properly identified as R, W and C.
At the end of the repair, the Nest has the power it needs, the heating zone energizes and the Burnham Alpine boiler receives the call for heat.

The most important technical sequence is around 7:35–12:08, where you identify the extra conductors, establish that one can become common, test continuity and select blue as the new C wire.

I fixed mine 5 years ago with a Google Nest Power Adapter. Got it from Amazon. Easy to install. Cost $25. No problems. Easier than fishing a common wire.
The C wire issue on Nest installs with boiler systems is genuinely one of the trickier setups – most DIY guides assume a forced-air system with a furnace, not a multi-zone hydronic setup. The relay box approach this tech used is solid when you can't run new wire. One thing worth knowing: if you have a multi-zone boiler like this and you're not 100% sure which wires go where, testing continuity before assuming anything is huge – a miswired common can do weird things to zone valves. If you're not comfortable tracing it yourself, it's worth having someone who knows boiler controls specifically look at it, not just a general HVAC tech. ARS/Rescue Rooter is one option to check depending on your area, though availability varies by location and not every branch handles hydronic systems the same way.

I appreciate the way you work and point out the issues on the systems you work on. A couple years ago i had an HVAC tech that took my new temperature probe and left me his old one. Also he moved the fan connection on the capacitor to herm and removed the 24V contactor cover. I brought him to perform maintenance and all he did was steal, and make sure that my system would fail in the future. Thanks for pushing all techs to perform good work.
What do you do when you have a steam boiler and only 2 wires going to your thermostat from t1 & t2? Had a nest thermostat that did not require the c wire, and it kept giving me the no C wire detected error code

I installed my Own Nest Tstat about 10 years ago for Hvac AC and forced Air furnace, no issues, I'm an Electrician not Plumber or Hvac guy ….a year ago Nest and Google decided to stop providing updates anymore so now its just a plain thermostat no more WiFi or App connection
I said Nest Can Eat me.
Let's see how complicated and troublesome we can make a switch. Oh, there is a sensor involved, but those pretty colors and stylish controls give me a boost when I play with them.

So the "helpful" brother-in-law incorrectly installed a garbage Nest thermostat, then stiffed them with hundreds of dollars in expenses for Mikey to fix and a handyman or painter to repair and paint the wall. Thank goodness I don't have one of those.
