“This discovery put Feynman on the map.” Uhh.. no he was a world renowned Nobel prize winning Physicist before the Challenger disaster. In fact it wasn’t Feynman who ‘discovered’ the O-ring issue the head engineer knew about it, confronted the top brass at NASA about it and they basically threatened his career if he decided to go public with it, since it would be very bad PR for NASA to admit they knew the issue ahead of time. So he basically hired Feynman, again a world renowned Physicist to confront them on live television which is what this clip is here.

My mom told me that she was in kindergarten at the time and her class was watching the launch live and she told me how everyone was quiet when it exploded
actully it was a combination of doanld kutnya, sally wright adn feynman who brought this to the attension of the commission, however it was feynmen who presented it as he was a noble prize winner for science and people would belive him the most

Absolute bullshit the engineers were overruled they said it was too cold but it launched anyway that’s what killed the crew as well as nasa attitude to safety. And f killed another 7 people with the same attitude in 2003

Here's my silly question, why didn't the warmth of the booster make the O-rings work?
Personally, I would’ve made the solid rocket boosters one piece they are gonna be reused anyway so why not just commission the shipyard to make them since they’re good at making big things as one piece for reuse?
Before anyone asks yes a train could’ve pulled it but new train tracks would’ve had to been built in 1981 or the year before even at 500 tons for each booster trans are designed for loads far more than that like it wouldn’t just be 1000 tons, it would be 20,000 tons before the train would start to struggle.

I would argue Feynman was on the map well before Challenger. He was a well known physicist by the 70s, let alone the 80s.

Morton Thiokol engineers believed that the SRBs would 'fail' (explode) on the launch pad.
The 'Teacher in Space' wound up becoming 'The Teacher at the Bottom of the Ocean'

Incredible how a machine that generates thousands of degrees of heat change has components that are defeated by 10's of degrees of cooling. Seems there should be better materials in use
