Porsche Mission S Concept: The Super Sports Car Above the 911

The Porsche Mission S is a mid-engine concept supercar positioned above the 911, built to introduce a new form language for Porsche. Here is a detail-by-detail look at the design, what Porsche explained, and what it left unanswered.

Unveiled on the Queens Pier in New York City, where the 550 Spyder debuted, the Mission S pairs motorsport heritage with function. The fenders sit higher than the hood so the driver can see where the wheels are, an open C-pillar slot channels air toward the rear wing, and the rear pays tribute to the flywheel on the 917. Head of Style Tobias Sühlmann described the design as form and function united.

Inside, five dials appear on start: a digital cluster with physical needles over it, in dials that change position. CEO Dr. Michael Leiters said it is designed to function much like a camera lens. Change the drive mode and the rev counter moves closer to the driver, and an On your own button lets the driver be completely isolated and connected with the car.

Yet Porsche kept the key mechanical details to itself. Leiters said the engine and transmission remain a secret (flat-6 or V8? manual or PDK?), that the Mission S will cost significantly more than a 911, and that production comes when it is ready. The architecture supports both combustion and hybrid powertrains, and the car has an 8,000 rpm redline.

  1. If Porsche puts this into production, what engine does it actually deserve:
    • An 8,000 RPM naturally aspirated Flat-6
    • V8
    • Hybrid
    • Something else
