I will say that in my experience when teaching Japanese speakers English, they can get confused about the position of the tongue and place it too far back on the roof of the mouth (where る happens in Japanese). They might also flail their tongues around a bit too much or open their mouths too wide. Personally, I put the tip of my tongue behind my bottom teeth when saying the L sound in English — in which case the middle of the tongue makes contact with the upper teeth. I find that this makes a good sound and requires less work. In any case, whether technically "correct" or not, it's how I've grown up speaking! For students who struggle with the upper teeth position, this can be a good alternative.
