Quick and Easy Dementia Test

It’s our mission to make dementia caregiving easier for families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, lewy body dementia, vascular dementia, or any other type of dementia. We do so by making free educational training videos like this so that anyone with an internet connection can access this information.

In this video, I share a quick and easy test often used in dementia testing. It’s called the clock draw test. This test alone can’t diagnose dementia, but it’s a good addition to other tests.

In case you haven’t met me, my name is Natali Edmonds and I am a board certified geropsychologist. That means that I am a clinical psychologist who specializes in working with older adults. One day, while hiking a trail, I came up with the idea for Careblazers and I decided to see if posting videos online could provide help to the many other Careblazers in the world who don’t get to have help come directly to them in their homes. I hope that this work helps you in some way on your caregiving journey.

  1. Well I wish you luck when thinking that you too will never be subjected to from week to week yourself too some day testing like for that kind of thing only. Like after you had beem forced to remain in bed for over 3 days in a row after say having to undergo emergency surgery for a broken hip.

  2. What about subjective perception of time for one with dementia. Might the key be literally broken internal clock? Bad circadian rhythms? And might that explain the shadowing; the weird shuffling pacing they do while walking?

  3. They gave my father that test. The woman giving it spoke in a very soft voice and my father was extremely hard of hearing, which I had told her. She wouldn't write it down, wouldn't say it any louder or rephrase it to something easier to hear, such as "draw the face of a clock". She wouldn't let me say it either. He couldn't hear what she wanted, so couldn't draw a clock face and she failed him. When we got home, I asked him to draw the face of a clock and he did. The test should at least be fair and that woman should be in a different career. Maybe IRS auditor or car repossession.
