I'd argue that 096 would still try to reach its target, all while elongating it's shadow, which would in turn stretch 096. Beyond that, I'm not sure how it would work.

I think so, if it works on living creatures there's nothing saying it wouldn't work on 096. even if he could distort his body in such a way, it wouldn't be entirely possible for him to move or distort enough to reach you if the room is big enough and you're out of range. yes it would make this difficult to retrieve any DNA samples of the sort but it would make it a lot easier, especially if there was a distraction involved
