In this episode of Korean Next Door, we visited a beauty consultant in Seoul’s Seongsu neighborhood and spent a session with Kim Ji-woon, who has read roughly 50,000 faces over 15 years.
We followed her through the full three-hour process: draping fabric swatches to find a client’s personal color, measuring shoulders, waist and back length for body-type analysis, mapping facial proportions down to the angle of the jawline, then consulting the client on what she should change to cover up her ‘flaws’ to fit the typical golden ratio. There was no holding back, because as Ji-woon says, “it’s not a consultant’s job to call everyone beautiful.”
About $200 for full image overhaul session. What started as a niche K-beauty trend is now a certified profession, and now Ji-woon lectures in a university smart-beauty program training the next wave of consultants.
So why has this beauty industry taken off especially in Korea? And why is beauty such a big deal in Korea? Find out the answer in the video.
Filmed at CCL Color Convergence Lab, Seong-su, Seoul.

imn confused? is it the same person?? she looks way better without makeup? Did she do her makeup wrong? is anybody feeling kinda confused. and she does not need plastic surgery
just disgusting . why is their mindset towards success and beauty so superficial
What's the drama about ?
No. No no no no no no NO.
Once you start, there is no end, except regret. If you change your nose, then your eye shape and size look wrong and then your eyebrows, your lips, your cheeks, your chin, your breasts, your stomach your bum…until you are nothing but a lump of barely human plastic on the outside and it starts again because trends will keep changing and you will be pushed to keep up.
None of that addresses any underlying psychological issues affecting self worth and none of it will stop you ageing. And will not stop your mortality.
A corpse full of botox and plastic is still a corpse. I really wish young people could grasp this. This new drive to look like AI cyborgs is deeply troubling.
Want help? Seek counselling and find ways to bolster your self esteem that don't involve fking your face up permanently.
It is pretty nasty how they use the same lipstick and other things for different clients. There are crazy amount of disease that spread and which are chronic and deadly for many. Just the different herpes viruses are truly devastating for many. So the fact that they share certain things is mind blowing. It reminds me of the old story back in the early 1900s when they used the same glass cups and called in penny licks which were notoriously known for spreading disease. People still haven't learn anything today.
She should blend her face makeup better to match her neck color.
the styling she gave the girl is terrible, doesnt enhance any of her face or body features! 😭
it takes a lot of trials and errors to find what clothes suits you, what color, what makeup, ect. you really have to put a lot of energy and money into it 😭 so a beauty consultant sounds amazing
Being beautiful is strategic. Many people want to say it doesn't matter but we are lying to ourselves if we said that "everyone is beautiful." This is objectively untrue. These types of services are a godsend for people who are clueless about what suits them and they are putting themselves at a disadvantage by now maximizing their looks.
She points out minor "flaws" because she knows bringing in more insecurities to these beautiful women makes her more money
Yet the beauty consultant need to do her own image first …. Beauty industry full of charlatans
They are all beautiful❤
very good!
She's wearing a lab coat. What are her credentials?
कोरिया बहुत डिस्टोपियन है।
Thanks 😊
At first, it's so easy to conclude that this industry is superficial. But one can really appreciate two insights in this line of work. First, some are clueless about what works for them and second, like the expert has mentioned, not everyone would have a trusted person to talk about these kind of things without the fear of judgement or whatever interpersonal relationship effect. Kind of sad but it's the reality in some people.
I thought this video might be one of the many beauty-centered contents on Youtube, but I think the video nicely explained why the beauty standard is so high in Korea. As someone living here can relate 😢
06:16 waat.. she don't need that she's already nice looking
