Six-Lane Freeway in Seattle That Doesn’t Touch the Ground

Six lanes cross two miles of Lake Washington — and nothing underneath is holding them up.

The lake is 214 feet deep, and below the bottom the soft silt keeps going down about as far
again. There is no rock to build on. A suspension bridge would need towers roughly 630 feet
tall — higher than the Space Needle — and SR 520 curves, so a suspension span was never
possible anyway.

So Washington stopped looking for the bottom. The road rides on 77 hollow concrete pontoons,
the largest 360 × 75 × 28 feet and 11,000 tons each, held by 58 anchors on cables three inches
thick and up to 1,000 feet long. The water displaced by the pontoons weighs exactly what the
bridge weighs — which is why concrete floats. And when the lake rises, the road rises with it.

In 1990 crews stored wastewater inside the pontoons of the I-90 bridge next door and removed
the watertight doors. A Thanksgiving storm filled them, and on November 25th a 2,790-foot
stretch of highway sank. Nobody died — it was closed for repairs.

At 7,708.5 feet, the SR 520 Evergreen Point Bridge is the longest floating bridge in the world.
77,000 vehicles cross it every day.

  2. This gives me the creeps. I would never cross that bridge. I know how to swim, but I'm old and in terrible condition. There's no way I could swim a mile to shore.
