The Grand Prairie ISD school board met for the first time since canceling a musical production at South Grand Prairie High School. The district claimed it was because a female student was cast as the male lead in the play ‘Little Shop of Horrors’.

Strange that a stupid law resulted in stupidity.
Really?… they should worry about why they kids can’t read. Lollll
I wonder what Sandy Duncan would have to say about this?
The state of Texas is at fault for making every school board and school feel paranoid about something that is solely about entertainment and making people feel good. What a shame that this is even a thing.
Local parochialism is neither new nor exceptional. No 'news' here.
Let me guess not enough transgender blind black Muslims who are nonbinary in the play???
Mom is the issue
Girl have a seat, bye the world has rules
The big question that needs to be addressed for all the "fan of Shakespeare and Peter Pan" is: was she going to dress as a male? Was she just going to be Seymour? If so, the Board is showing a lack of basic understanding of how theatre works.
If she was going to play "Dior", a gender swapped version of Seymour, are they going to gender swap Audrey (maybe as Ashley, an old English male name that is commonly a female name in the U.S. just to mess with them) and Orin (Lauren?)? As such, no issues with the law now, so what is the concern?
If ONLY her role was going to be gender-swapped, then we have created an issue. Now, you have a lesbian character that kills her crush's boyfriend and feeds him to a plant before convincing her that it is true love. This is at the high school level. That is legally a problem. Of course, reasonable people look at the law and the events here and need to think about whether or not this is what they intended the law to do. If it is, cool. If not, they need to work on the law.
Sherry shepherd is the genie in Aladdin on broadway right now.
Texas? Sounds about right.
I thought conservatives were all about merit. Clearly the best boy for the job was a girl.
All keep using examples of Adults.
These are KIDS,I hope the teacher is not trying to push gender idolatry.
All the people up in arms in the comments apparently didn't actually watch the segment.
… This isn't an unintended consequence of the Senate bill. School board has to follow the laws just like everybody else.
Do I agree with it? No; at least not this consequence of it.
My sister and I had the same teachers from 3rd grade on. Both of our 4th grade classes did a play on Christopher Columbus. A girl in her class played Columbus and did fine.
I see a lot of comments where it’s like “men used to play women” or “there’s some plays where women play men”…this isn’t one of those. I would not watch a Little Shop of Horrors where Seymour is not played by a male, just be weird.
If we don’t want boys in girls sports, then we need to cast boys in boys roles. Can’t have it both ways, folks.
Texas is crazy
That's the best show they could come up with? Not appropriate. STOP THE WOKE CRAP
They better cancel Monty Python, Shakespear and Peter Pan. Poor Benny Hill has no chance and neither does Little Britian. This is what happens when people can't think critically.
Ancient Greek theater, Shakespearean theater, Kabuki theater, and Peter Pan for goodness sake… Casting folks as characters who don't share their gender has always been a part of theater.
Why were they going to have a female play a males role?
“New York has”—stop right there. T-E-X-A-S.
This is stupid. The same people today whining over who's playing what role in a school play are the same people who will think that watering crops with Gatorade is a good idea.
